I'm happy to report that it's looking highly probable now.

I've been chasing this for a couple of years, after I located this anomaly on bathymetric mapping software.

I've just spoken with Dr. Glikson, who is a leading expert on the subject, and he's confirmed that it looks extremely likely to not only be a crater, but in fact is probably an extraordinary crater because of it's young age.

There's much work to be done to confirm my hypothesis, but I wanted to share this with my DPC family, as today was the moment I've been waiting for - confirmation of high probability.

To put this in perspective, there are currently 183 confirmed craters on the planet. And I'm working on another one here in New Mexico as well, so I'm fairly stoked at this point. Fortunately I won't need expensive underwater drilling teams to confirm that one.

Here's the images of the structure. This is under about 5-10 meters of water.

I had to look this word up even tho I had heard the word before, and while I'm sure Bear meant it in the spirit of Definition 1, I'm going to apply it to Cory as used in definition #2 just because I think it would annoy him ;)

Far out! (early 60s hyperbole). Maybe you should cross-post in the Astronomy thread ... and keep us updated, especially when the journal article is published. :-)

Ha! I love it. My suspicion is that Bear refers to me as such because I fit BOTH definitions so darn well. :-D

with any luck they'll find a black monolith buried in the center of it

So, if this is confirmed as being a meteorite crater, do they name it after you?

No. That would be extremely unusual. Usually named after the location, but they might let me help name it, which would be very cool.

Black monolith - a reference to 2001: A Space Oddesy.

This is such exciting news

Really? You're discovering meteorite craters and you don't know about 2001??? Disappointed Cory, disappointed.

ETA: Obvious congratulations

Cool find it aslo looks like you found Atlantis on the right side over the Maimi map key.

you cant really see it from Google earth either although other features are visible.. t looks like some sort of movement of the sands with current in toward the crater.

Opening sequence, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Oh yeah and congrats on Cory's Crater! Must be very exciting to find something like that. Maybe it was part of the dinosaur-killing asteroid? Didn't that one land in or near the Yucatan? Let us know when the National Geographic article runs!

Look at the older maps using earth.. that's sand from dredging going on in the channel cut.

Much younger, this is quite rare in fact, simply because of where it is, the feature can't be more than a few tens of thousands of years old, probably less. Making it a very young feature.
