Are Gumboots considered shoes, Many of the Whanua here wear them as such, they are a cultural thing here and white ones are very sought after items.
Also they are predominant in the rural population being worn every where.would these be suitable for the challenge or would I risk a DNMC? TIA

They are shoes to me. I would say they meet the challenge description.

I think if it goes on the feet it meets the challenge

Shoes is pretty much a catch all foe any item that goes on your feet. So shoes, boots, slippers etc etc all works for me.
01/14/2015 08:57:08 AM · #5
I think that slippers, flip flops, etc do not match for shoes.
There were other challenges " footwear is one of them

How about special types of shoes/boots? Ones for skiing, snowboard, skating (both for ice and roller skating), ballet, climbing... Are they "Shoes" or "Footwear"?

As for the definition "all things that go on feet", i almost responded to this thread with the same definition. Then it came to me that socks fit that definition and are definitely not shoes :-)

There goes my dream :(

On the other hand, who cares if they are shoes or not, as per some arbitrary definition.
Being DNMC will not get you a DQ, it will only get you low votes. If you like the image and fits YOUR definition of the challenge topic - submit it. Someone will appreciate it, for sure. I have done this numerous times.

DPC at its best, debating what sort of footwear is and is not a shoe. I don't know whether to laugh or weep. Maybe spend less time worrying and more time following your muse in a footward direction and see where she takes you?

I agree with Bear -- but I'm laughing, not weeping. :)

But, flip flops are definitely shoes. And slippers are shoes these days because kids are wearing them to school, etc.: they're using them as shoes.

If an awesome photo of a hat or a mountain is entered, I will frown and mutter about DNMC. (And vote it low).

If an awesome photo of flip-flops is entered, I'll give it a 10.

Dictionary definition of a shoe: an outer covering for your foot that usually has a stiff bottom part called a sole with a thicker part called a heel attached to it and an upper part that covers part or all of the top of your foot.

But alternate definition in dictionary of shoe: something resembling a shoe in function or placement

I've been waiting for this challenge, because I had BIG plans for it. But, alas, I am currently 1300+ miles from my desired subject. (Normally, I'm less than 50). Oh, well, maybe next time.

Since I am taking up this challenge, and it is my first one, I wanted to ask a question. Particularly, is it cool to ask fellow photographers for their thoughts/opinions about a my photo before submission? How many of you do this, if at all? Probably a total rookie question, but I just wanted to make sure I am not doing anything.....unsavory. Thanks!

It's OK to ask for opinions on a potential entry, but then many of those who offer them will recuse themselves from voting on it. Post it in your Workshop folder, and communicate with reviewers via the Personal Messaging system.

Awesome GeneralE. One other question for other Lightroom users out there. To ensure I am within the 'pixel count', I should check out the metadata, correct? Currently the cropped photo says 1755x1993 (I am assuming this is the pixel count). If so, I need to crop it more to ensure I am within the parameters of the challenge correct? I just want to make sure I am doing this correctly. Thanks again!

That is one thing that I have LOVDE about DPC is the collaboration between the members and the feedback to improve.

No sugar coating on that part and the advice is wonderful ... so many have helped me through editing and choose with especially with learning going on, all you have to do is ask.

Can't wait to see your submissions

At this point resize, don't crop, unless you want to change the composition.

Thanks again GeneralE, I found the in the export section of Lightroom where it it allows for resize of image by pixels. I just set it to 1200x1200.

jgirl57.....yea, this is pretty awesome. I probably would have been screwed without being able to solicit some 'assistance'. I hope to submit my photo this evening. I think I am just going to go with my shot pretty much as is, and see what happens. After all, it is my photo, and I want to see what I may be doing right/wrong. It is all subjective anyways. :)

Well, "FIRE ONE"! I just submitted an image for my first challenge. I hope it does at least reasonably well. I am already starting to think of what the comments are going to be (cringe).

Ummm…. quick question:

When you resized, did you end up stretching your photo? It wasn't a square crop to begin with, and if you saved it to 1200x1200, it might have stretched it in a strange way.

Well, this could be a problem if your original image is not square -- you are not allowed to resize disproportionally (which distorts the image). You should set it to resize maintaining proportions (aspect ratio) with the "longest" side set to 1200 pixels.
01/17/2015 11:21:24 AM · #22
my final image came out to Width:1200 to Height: 98, and I don't think the image is distorted at all.
01/17/2015 11:32:29 AM · #23
Well that's a problem, because it needs to be at least 160 pixels on the shortest side (unless that's a typo and you mean 980 pixels)

Nope -- You just worried us when you said 1200x1200. :)

Although 1200 by 98 is really really short…

oppps....yes it is 1200x981
