I got a DQ for my painting entry.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/2000-2999/2031/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1137392.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/2000-2999/2031/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1137392.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

No problem with that, I was away for a few days pre-Christmas and totally missed the request for the original. Never mind.

Looking at the image again though, perhaps it would have been a DQ anyway? It's the first time I've used a texture in advanced and I'm not sure if this texture is 'creating' the sky too much. It's just one photo of the trees and one texture. It does look like the texture is giving the impression of stars which is why I'm not sure how it would do. It'll be good to clarify for the future.

I believe that was the discussion to be had and the reason why the original was requested.

For the sake of community clarity - I'd have voted for no DQ. It works as a texture for me. I'm just one SC though and this is always going to be a subjective matter.

I sure hope not.

I don't think you went too far & it doesn't look like stars to me. It would be good to see the original, though, if you feel like posting it.

Love the image just as it is... for the record, I've been turning off all scratches and lights in the NIK overlays and would love to know if that's what created the impression of stars... and then if it's legal or not.

It is a marvelous image, but in the spirit of disclosure, I'm the one who flagged it.

It is a pity we did not receive the original in order to have this discussion with SC first. But as the texture overlay is a new addition to the pantheon, we're still working out where the "line" is. As with all things subjective, it's a matter of perception. There are past entries which passed validation, which today may not have (based on this "line" refinement).

In the case of this image, the appearance of "stars" in a daylight sky seemed odd, and I wanted SC to make sure they were in the original image.

PS- dust and scratches (and any other texture) are fine as long as they don't appear as distinctive shapes. Dial it back a bit if they seem too prominent, or mask out any areas that seem too defined.

I still think when any image is DQ'd as a result of SC figuring out where the line is with respect to adding textures (and I agree with figuring it out) that the person not be held to the penalties of a DQ. Once the line is established only them should the participant have the DQ count. So basically the DQ should apply to the image in the challenge but not to the photographer.

This being said I don't think this particular image crossed the texture line and it's too bad the timeline to submit the original was missed.

This is not my point...so back to the original post.
Assuming the I original image was submitted on time would it have been approved or DQ'd based on the texture?

This is one of the major problems at dpc.and their rules, NONE OF THEM SHOULD BE SUBJECTIVE..

In questions of opinion or taste, EVERYTHING IS SUBJECTIVE

Without seeing the original it is impossible to answer your question. I saw the "stars" and other things in the sky, and those looked added to me, not enhanced versions of something already there. To ME, they were featured enough to draw attention to them, so even in this sort of challenge, it was questionably legal. Perhaps if they had been applied at a lower opacity, or slightly masked out, it might look different. I don't know. The SC struggles with these questions as much as anyone else. We are also under a time constraint to validate (or not) in a timely manner. Every so often, there is an image that divides our opinion. This is one of those.

I'll post up the original and the texture file in a couple of days when I'm home and able to do it. Like I said, the timing of this has been tricky this week as I've been away so much but it'll be interesting to still post them up so we can have the discussion.

Just to clarify, this isn't a moaning thread, I'm more than happy with the DQ and also I'd be more than happy if the image went into a DQ because of the texture. I just find it an interesting case to discuss with regards to clarifying the recent advanced rules changes.

Personally, if I was SC and working within the rules that are set then I think I would probably go with a DQ. Anything even resembling stars, or even much of a sky, was added through the texture. but that was just a happy coincidence really. I didn't plan the texture to do that, it just worked.
