Sounds like a challenge idea!

I agree with thee other comments with regard to the dog's face and such, but I also found that the darks were underexposed (the dog's body and your wife's behind) and the color of your wife's jacket to be too bright and somewhat distracting. The think a bit of fill flash would have helped here. The backlighting on the dog's fur is nice, but a some fill flash to bring some detail to the black fur in the body would have helped.

If I was voting on it I would have had one nitpick, but it was minor I thought (will share that point later - don't want to influence any feedback).

What did I miss?

Would this (my Free Study entry) been better suited for "Happy Animals"?

5.8 is respectable. I like that it shows more context of the story. The focal point at first are the knees so going with a gut reaction vote, it'll score lower. The image requires more time to settle in, to get the whole story. I also think the FS shot would've done better in Happy Animals. Has really nice timing. The color balance looks a bit off in the both of the pics. Magenta is taking over (eta: more so in the FS one). With your permission, I'd like to color adjust it. Please PM if interested.

If the processing does not, at a minimum, require the Expert Editing rules then Mike is just not going to like it.

thats not true.

this image in particular has nothing that even remotely interests me. no eye contact, no faces, so sense of what is going on, nothing to draw me in. I have no emotional connection to anyone or anything in this image. it has an animal in it so i guess it qualifies as meeting the challenge. a 6+ and a top 10-15% , thats ambitious...

the best thing that i would recommend to do to make it interesting to anyone but the photographer is to clone out everything and make it an abstract image of some leaves.

Agreed, the photographer obviously has a personal connection to the subjects and the image. That makes for a great snapshot or family album photo. Without that personal connection, which none of the rest of us at DPC are going to have, the photo lacks interest.
