I was kind of thinking about wooden bugs, those aren't real, or even glass that would be better

In all seriousness, would a photo of a woody model be DQ'd because it came from a living tree once?

reading Bear's post, I doubt it. I think a by-product of a once living thing will fly. A picture of a dead plant or a dead animal, not so much.

Personally, I am only going to DNMC something currently alive or something that was recently alive (dead flowers, dead bugs, tree limbs, etc.) I am OK with an object containing something that was alive (woody, jello) or is alive (water). Bear is correct, just use common sense.

All this talk of Jello....serious question....is Jello a no-no for vegetarians? I'd never really thought about that before.

I'm still not having fun. It just reminds me that nearly everything is petroleum based. Here come the crystals. How beautiful life was.

C'mon people, it's not that hard. Don't shoot bugs, animals, plants, alive or dead. Byproducts aren't gonna be an issue.

A strict vegetarian shouldn't eat jello, for sure.

Gelatin can come from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hides and connective tissues. Today, the gelatin in Jell-O is most likely to come from pigskin.

Collagen doesn't dissolve in water in its natural form, so it must be modified to make gelatin. Manufacturers grind the body parts and treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to dissolve the collagen. Then the pre-treated material is boiled. Controls at every step of the process ensure purity and safety. The materials are washed and filtered repeatedly. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down; the resulting product is a gelatin solution. That solution is chilled into a jelly-like material, cut and dried in a special chamber. At this point, the dried gelatin -- about 10 percent water -- is ground. If it's going to make Jell-O, it will be ground into a fine powder.

This is further clarified by "Extra Rules: Shots of currently living or once living things may be disqualified."

I hadn't seen this until now. This is completely unnecessary and just stirs the pot. No wonder all the churn. Anyone who enters a bug or leaf will be voted down to DQ depths anyway. The challenge is no longer the photographer's but the voter's to see if they can find some disqualifying element. Too much emphasis on what not to photograph. Maybe I'll sit.

And why the may? Are we afraid we won't be able to tell if it was ever living or not?

"May" in this case = "are subject to" ...

That still means up to discretion, or am I wrong?
11/13/2014 09:25:34 PM · #40
It means that -- unlike the "usual" case with DNMC situations, the image is subject to/eligible for/can be disqualified. Without the extra rule, it doesn't matter whether or not you meet the challenge description, we won't DQ it.

What's your point/concern exactly?

Well, you see, when a man and a woman love each other a lot.. Oh, sorry. I thought you meant "intimate".

Yes, inanimate could describe some relationships.

Hehe, I missed that subtle but very clever thing you did there. Nice!

In answer to the question asked in the title of this thread.....my score.

To quote G.O.B. Bluth...I've made a huge mistake.

Well I got over myself, and have an entry sitting in this challenge -- in all its possibly disqualifiable glory.
