Having failed miserably in December, I'll be happy to try again in February.

Same here. I had two essays somewhat ready and dismissed them. I am my worst critic.
Will try on February, rain or snow. I enjoyed them too much

Yes. In for February. I'll be trying a photo essay this time, rather than an essay about photographs. Less puff and more blow, I hope.

You .. Yes, I mean you .. You can do this. Give it a shot in February. It's satisfying to do it, and even more rewarding to interact with the other essayists.

...okay, I'm in.

Sometimes, well most of the time, I suffer from too many ideas and now they are cluttered and all stuck together in my head...idea blobs/knots. I meant to start detangling for December, but instead I just added to the mess. I will start now for February...I will most likely have more than one I think.

A bump for the photo essay. For those who have not started, there is still time to pull one together.

I'll open a new forum on Feb 28 for posting.

I thought I would give this a try. I have sifted through some 2014 outings for a loosely connected group of images. Should I winnow it down further? In what order should I present them? Does it have much/anything to say? I am still wrestling with a minor few questions, but I will have something.

You're kidding. Your passionate & wonderful subway transit project is begging for a place at the essay table. A couple of places actually, or even more. Order ... try the same as a song: Verse, verse, chorus, verse. That would work with 8 photographs, or with 16. But 32's probably too many.

I'm looking forward to your essay Mark. Thanks for playing!

Henry may have posted this link sometime earlier, but just in case here's the link to lensculture which is the best photo essay site I've seen. Actually, the best photograph site I've seen.

Click on Explore>Categories>[your thing here] and enjoy some wonderful essays by artists both famed and unsung.

This site looks interesting but the one I've posted and enjoy visiting is LenScratch

Mark, glad to see you give this a try. I agree with Paul on your train series. Unlimited potential with this subject matter.

It's the process, more than the final result, that so rewarding. If you're like me your final result will be nothing like your original intention. Not always the case, but I often change direction. Most of my efforts are based around 2 or 3 images that seem to work well together. Sometimes working backwards, end to beginning, works well. Just some random thoughts on this exercise..

I believe there is probably some good stuff there. Unfortunately, their site is impossible to navigate. IE throws errors, Chrome just spins and spins...

Mine isn't ready... time plays tricks with how I see things.

February 2015 essays are now being posted. If you find this genre of photography interesting I recommend you look though some of the creative work being done by fellow DPCers. The next photo essay due date is April 31. If you've read this far go ahead and give it a try. It's a worthwhile exercise even if you don't post an essay.

February 2015 was a good month for essays, with 10 postings and comments continue to trickle in. We expected a few more entries, and there is still time, but all in all a great job by everybody. New participants ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' markwiley and ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_N.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21_N.gif', '/') + 1) . ' chalice joined us and delivered. Just wanted to say thank you to all the essayists.

Your thoughts, opinions and suggestions are welcome. For now, we'll continue with the every other month posting cycle.

Enjoy!

Best thing happening on DPC in my opinion :)

I look forward to the next round. Need to start thinking about it.

I was interested to see the following photo essay on Lensculture.

A little bit about Shanghai

For those of you who have been taking part in this side challenge over the last year, you may remember my own essay about Shanghai. I think the concept was pretty similar. I'm just disappointed not to have had the opportunity to re-visit Shanghai recently to continue the study in more depth.

January Essay 2014 - Shanghai

Thanks for posting. His Shanghai essay started slowly with images that could be about anyplace in China. Then he pulls back a little and shows the changes taking place. Out with the old and in with the new. The scale of this change is amazing and makes a powerful essay. I see it on a much smaller scale when we visit Taiwan. You mentioned your disappointed in not having an opportunity to re-visit Shanghai and study this more. We all regret not taking that one extra picture. We don't get many second chances so make the most of what's before you. You could always start shooting macros in a controlled environment ;-) But even then change is taking place.
