Me too.

Always a treat to see what everybody comes up with. This side challenge is loosely based on the photo essay so video, including stills, is also welcome. Be creative and take us a little deeper than a single image. Good luck!

How are your essays coming along?

I mentioned a due date of December 1st for posting another round of photo essays. My intention, hoping for more participation, was to offer a larger window than usual. Is this extra time useful or an invitation to procrastination? What Iím trying to say is Iíve finished my essay. Should we stick with December 1st?

I can post mine as well, Henry.

The more I work on it the worse it will get, so it'll be merciful if I post it now.

I'll be OK with November 1

I am currently without any camera equipment as i'm in the middle of a system swop. I'll be ok for Nov 1st though.

I'll open a forum for posting essays on November 1st. Hope this works for everybody.

Clive, another system swap? I'm curious what you're going with?

I want to start incorporating more video and film-making both in wedding work and my own personal work. The Nikon's aren't great for video in many ways so my first thought was to build up a system to use parallel to them but in the end I figured it would be great to just have one system to do both - one where I can photograph a wedding and flick a switch to do a bit of video on the run as well. So that led me back to micro four thirds and I figured that in nearly 200 weddings i've only been asked for a file bigger than 5000px on the long end once and I hardly ever crop so as long as i could get the right lenses for a bit of shallow depth of field i'd be happy enough. In-camera stabalisation and fast lenses will hopefully keep the ISO lower as well.

So i've got a couple of the Panasonic g85's and am aiming to get a GH5 next year.

I've got an auto-focus Olympus lens line up of - 12mm f2, 25mm f1.2 (the new one) and the 75mm f1.8

along with the Voigtlander's 17.5mm f0.95 and 42.5mm f0.95

I might get either Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 or the Voigtlander 10.5mm f0.95 later depending on how the other lenses pan out.

Hoping that'll be an interesting photography/film-making hybrid system.

Clive, not many have your experience across so many camera technologies. 200 weddings! Nobody is going to question what you show up with. Choosing one camera, for all your needs, will require a few sacrifices. Having said that M43 is very versatile and possible the most enjoyable cameras to use. Good luck!

Essayists, one month before we begin posting photo essays.

Henry,

My essay is getting less interesting, more banal, with every passing day. By November 1 it will be intolerably awful. That'll be your fault, of course.

I'd like to be added to the current photo essay list. But... What I've created this time is a hardbound book. Since the layout of a series of two-page spreads is part of the viewing experience, I also created an .epub version of the book that retains the two-page spreads.

I can put the epub in a dropbox folder and share a public link. Will this be okay? The file is over 40 MB.

Put a cork in it. You'll have fine wine. Paul, you're piquing my curiosity.

Bill,

Happy to see you'll be joining us. I'd like to see your book so sure. You could always create an essay about your book, even including photos of your book. Artists do this all the time on LenScratch.

Thought I'd share for those about to start or in mid-flight. The photoessay offers so many possibilities.

John Brubaker's work On Confluence is quite interesting. Not only the images but his development techniques and sources.

interesting interview with Sean O'Hagon Photography, Poetry, Music and Philosophy: The Medium from a Critic's Eye.

He touches on photoessays but it's mostly about photographs and writing. I thought those working on essays would enjoy.

Thank you Henry for the posts. I had seen Brubakerís work and loved the look of his processing but I hadnít read about the technique. That is fascinating. Iím looking forward to reading OíHagonís interview. Iím still hopeful that I will have an essay but it wonít get posted until mid November.

So far I am completely inspired and in awe of everything I've seen. Well done and can't wait to see what everyone else puts up.

P.s. - Sorry for posting in the other thread. I didn't realize this was where the discussion was going to be. :)

Great stuff people. Hope to get to commenting once I'm back home next week.

Just posted some pictures too
I was so busy the last weeks I didn't come up with a real essay.

But I'm looking forward to see all your posted essays and learn more about this genre.

Paul, certainly Iím not alone in wishing you would post your essay. Youíve never disappointed before.

Plenty on our plate, with our essays being posted, but I thought this was a clever idea. Iím usually not that interested in images edited beyond the capabilities of a camera and darkroom. A fisherman full of lures and hooks, a carpenter full of nails and boltsÖ

Oh Paul, let us tear your feeble essyay to pieces and we'll learn something from it!
