... organize your photos? i'm finding that i'm taking way more photos than i can actually deal with (yep, i'm trigger happy ;). anyone got any hints and tips how they 'process' their volume of photos?

That is a great question. I have been struggling with the same thing.
I dump them onto cds and date it, not to effective.
I was thinking of trying to create contact sheets for the cds.
Hopefully someone will answer with some good suggestions.

I use Portfolio. It lets you look at your photos in a number of different layouts and sets up custom fields you can search in the database. For example, I have dropdowns to pick things like the name of the archive CD, the subject (portrait, floral, whatever), and the orientation (horizontal, vertical, square). I have edit fields for things like location and keywords. I can search on any one of these fields.

Portfolio is not cheap. If you are on a Mac running OS X, iPhoto has some of these features and is free.

If you use a Mac, then iPhoto is the right tool for this job... effortless!

I am using iPhoto, it works really nice, the only problem I have is once you get aroun a 1000 images or more it moves kinda slow, but I think anything would. I have gotten to the point of droping my pictures into iPhoto and just burning a cd at minimum of once a month, it helps me keep them in order. Anyone notice that once you rotate a picture in iPhoto it really slows the whole thing down?

I had the same problem in iphoto about the number of picts. So now I dump them on cds. But how do you catagorize the cds so you know exactly what is on them? Just by date?

Good question. I'm interested how others do that, too.
At the moment I make a subdirectory for each "session" where I put all variants of a photo. I name the subdirectory with a date tag and the photo title. E.g. for my texture submission I named it "020721_stein_papier_schere". 020721 for 21st July 2002 and "Stein, Papier, Schere" is german for rock, paper, scissors. So the subdirectoies are in an chronological order but I also can read what's in the directory. I think it will take some years until I stop remembering the photos when I see the title ;-)

there''s a few good solutions:

extensis.com has portfolio. that''s prolly the best out there.

also check out all the shareware options here shareware

alot of these programs will track what file is on what disc, if you name each disc uniquely. then when you request that pic it will tell you to stick in that disc. . . :)

I have used Retriever for years. Best 20 bucks I ever spent.
