Again two totally conflicting comments!

Great capture of the ball - and the intense expressions of the faces. Excellent submission for this challenge.

wish I could see their faces

You could see some of the faces, you couldn't see others. Maybe it just depended what people were concentrating on?

If people have been good enough to comment, I'd say they spent longer on the shot than average!

no.

Most voters do NOT actually look at the image.

And I have proof.

New title to this image: "Lips, Smoke and Bubble"

read some of the comments.

and I was PM'd several times by people telling me they didn't know what it was and didn't see any smoke.

It just goes to prove that "cultural" background plays an important part in our judging criteria.

You are submitting your photos for review by other photographers -- so no, the majority are not looking at the image, they are looking at the light and shadow interplay, DOF, focus and a dozen other things.

One thing I've learned is the image has to hit them over the head for them to stop inspecting it and actually look at it.

I still have not decided if this is a bad thing or not -- but am leaning toward not.

Well I certainly do. I study each and every one carefully and intently. Sometimes I'll even turn the monitor on. ;-)

That's actualy a very good point...and I fall right into this category... I actually think this is a good thing, I'm not looking for "moral judgement" but for "technical judgement"...and I guess I judege the way I'd like to be judged.

I'm not looking for any kind of judgement, but appreciate a critical comment which does not neglect the gist of a photograph.

"Wish I could see their faces" was my comment. Not a meant in a negative fashion and I gave you a decent vote. In looking at your photo -- 3/4 of the players, all you can see is their butts. To me a great sports action photo you can see the tension of the moment on the faces of the players, not their back ends. Looking at the 1st and 3rd place winners you can see what I mean. I tried and tried to get that kind of shot myself but found it rather hard with football helmets!

Meanwhile, if what you want are feel good comments or non conflicting comment perhaps you can put that in your title. Everyone see things differently, what catches my eye may make no difference to anyone else. That's what makes us unique and makes this site valuable -- the ability to learn from those different opinions.

Yes, I took the time to look at your photo -- took the time to comment too.

Thanks for the reply and for the explanation Debi
I do appreciate comments I really do and didnt want to offend anyone by posting my two different comments received

I think Rugby is a silly game anyway ( I can hear the boos and hisses already!!LOL) The game was just around the corner from where I live so I decided to pop over and take a few shots for the challenge it was a really dull day just staring to rain.
I took 3 images, all they seemed to do was huddle together so the butt images seemed appropriate. One thing I did notice was all the sideline players (terrible noise all yelling!) I was pleased to get one shot with the actual ball about to be kicked, and pleased with my result in the challenge.
I can see it lacks the 'Wow'factor of the top images and professional game shots, but to me I was pleased to get the shot in focus and with action and get out of there!
I dont want feel good comments all the time, some are nice, I just found that the two comments conflicted and posted them without a lot of thought. I guess!
Thanks anyway

You know, I've never seen a rugby game in my life. I wouldn't know if it's silly. I'm sending my son out the door for football (American football) practice soon. It can be a silly game at times. Watching the parents can be even sillier or alarming depending on the parent!

Just to clarify -- I'm not against butt shots, I just prefer them in say.... water polo! :-)

All games have a seasoning of silliness at their heart. If they didn't; they wouldn't be fun.

... especially the multi-day test matches.

Ah,

I used to think the same about cricket, but then I was invited to go to a game. You have to realise that there must be some reason why people get excited about going - so I went, and discovered the reason why.

It's simply an all day drinking event, a relaxed pleasant way to enjoy a warm sunny saturday (avoiding shopping) and consume a ridiculous amount of alcohol, the 'sport' is just a side attraction to give you something to focus on during those 'phasing out' moments

I hope this helps to enlighten a few of you :)

I think the voters are doing an excellent job. Every challenge has *GREAT* images top30. When you have 200+ votes, of course there will be a few crazy votes/comments, but alltogheter I think voters are great.

Cricket is the world's biggest game of chess. It's awesome, and the tests are the best. Well they are the best so long as you are an Aussie cricket fan. ;)

Yup. It's a public site with the general public as voters. Sometimes I wonder of some of the photographers forget where they submitted their entry.

My favorite comment this week was someone commenting my picture would lose votes because it was manipulated. Bear in mind that it is an advanced edting challenge. Perhaps they thought editing was bad. Or didn't notice the challenge rules, or worse yet thought my editing was bad. (Which is a distinct possibility.)

Obviously, 1 day cricket is not the Aussies forte right now lol

Here's more proof. Read the first comment on this excellent image:

Takes me back to my idea in the thread Critique the Critiques. One could take that a bit further and use that rating to weigh votes. People with high ratings for their comments weigh in higher when they vote.

Democracy crippled? I don't think so, but I guess it's ground for it's on discussion somewhere..
