My wife and I opted not to have our wedding photographer put a photo book together for us, since my wife is quite artistic and said she would enjoy doing it herself. So now I'm looking for suggestions for places to get photo books printed once she's designed it - we're looking for a lay-flat book with an acrylic cover but all the places I've looked at seem to do either lay-flat or an acrylic cover but not both at the same time.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Sorry, I can't really help with UK based companies, but I did go through the process of finding a company in Australia. My steps for Australia might help to give you some ideas:

1. I decided I wanted to print a book
2. I asked on DPC……. that didn’t help me at all 
3. I googled for different companies
4. I got a LOT of hits….. had to dig further for loads of reviews
5. Got confused by the different opinions in the reviews
6. Picked my favourite 3 companies according to price and reviews
7. Downloaded each company’s software….. THAT is what made the difference for me…..the software varied between acceptable (if I can’t find anything better) and incredibly useless.
8. Decided to go for the one that had a really good price plus bearable software.

The crowd I went with (called www.photobookexpress.com.au) has amazing prices, questionable software and LOUSY customer service. When things went wrong (their fault, not mine) it was difficult to solve the problem because the “service” people are so NOT interested in providing service. This isn’t only MY opinion, but also that of a friend of mine who had very similar experiences with them. And yet, the price is totally unbeatable, hence I am willing to put up with lousy “service” and a not-quite-perfect end result.

The book I got from in the end would make most average users deliriously happy. Only picky folks - like DPCers - would have problems with the imperfections in an otherwise gorgeous book.

So what I am trying to say - this time in a nutshell - is this:

• Google. Research. Ask friends. Decide.
• You get what you pay for. If you have a money tree, go for quality and price and hope to get service as part of that. If you are poor, make the most of what you can afford.
• Buy only ONE book to try them out first. If you think you like them, go back for more.
• Don’t expect miracles in return for peanuts.

I cross fingers for you.

Congratulations - Have use Photobook many times and have been very pleased. Don't think this is the same as previously posted re Photobookexpress.

//www.photobookworldwide.com/

Great prices, fast delivery, excellent quality imho and I am picky. Printing is done in Malaysia. Have no idea if they do the kind of cover you want.

I haven't ordered from Millers before but I've heard good things. //www.millerslab.com . They seem to offer the lay flat and acrylic cover options. Will ask a friend her opinion as I remember she's using another company and pretty happy with the print books. It might've been GraphiStudio.

Another is www.renaissancealbums.com

p.s. If you look at Mpix, do see if their pro account at MpixPro offers other things.

I've also used this company. They were very good quality and the service was good. Don't know if they do acrylic though. If you are UK based, you could take a look at Loxley Colour, they are also good.
