where did this image fail to connect in the July Freestudy?

I have fairly thick skin and take my 5's and occasional 4's without any complaints really - most of them deserve the score they received.

However, this time I had pretty high expectations - figured maybe even a mid to upper 6 was possible.

So, if you don't mind taking a look ... what's the scoop? Thanks.

Hey, look at the bright side...you got a higher participant score than non-participant. That's a rarity.

BTW...I gave it a 7, so I can't tell you why it only got a 6.

I gave you a 6, which means (to me) its among the better images in the challenge, but is lacking the extra pop to put it in the upper echelon, i.e. 7-10 range. I usually go back and revisit my votes before rollover and adjust up or down based on the other entries in the challenge (I grade on a curve!), but didn't have time to do that this month for the FS. Had I done so, I think this likely would have stayed right where it was -- a perfectly nice image, but nothing to elevate it above the crowd.

I remember this one well. It was unusual. That lovely monochromatic golden color
made me stay in the picture for a long time. Placement of the main subject was excellent
and the reflection worked well. It was one of those that I wished was mine.

So I gave it a 9.

All I can say is "you win some, you lose some."

Hang in there.

+1 didn't fail at all. it was super.

For me, it felt washed out through all the tonalities, and the extremely bright reflections lower left take me away from the subject. I gave it a 5. Huge potential, but unrealized.

One of your 8's here and I don't throw those around - but I bumped from a 6 to a 7 to an 8 in the last hours which in this case meant I was trying to find a compromise between the wow initial impact and the technicalities which I felt were somehow lacking. I think Bear hit it for me. And though it did not enter the equation when I voted, I think a flip would help, too. I do think some further processing with some of these comments in mind could be very gratifying :)

Take a look at the ribbon winners (All animal nature shots) they have action and or interaction.
If it's not doing something exciting then it's no more than a bird identification shot.
The bird I.D. images that do well are super crisp with super detail.
I really enjoyed the colors in your image and connected with it.
I spent lots of time in Maine and your image took me there right away but the left sid ehurt my eyes it was so bright.
I ended up giving you a 7.

For the record, I would jump up and down for a 6+ in the free study.

I gave you a 5. If you hadn't called it "On Golden Pond" I would have scored it a point or two higher, but your title made me realize, "oh yeah, that does look like the posters for that movie" which made it seem less original.

its a good thing it wasn't a picture of a human, nobody likes those.

:-D Yikes! Thanks for all of the feedback. I'm at work and just poked my head in. More appropriate thanks & kudo's forthcoming.

I guess it all really just comes down to personal taste. Some people liked the bright areas, others didn't. Other people, you'll just get a five or less, because that's the way they roll for whatever reason. Look at the top 10 in the Free Study. Beautiful, well composed images, all of them. Every one got at least one vote of 4 or less, most of them more than one. Your's got four. I don't know whether those voters truly believed those photos were that bad, or if they are just jerks, (probably a mix of the two), but that's just the way it is around here.

In the end, you ended up with a 6.03 in a Free Study, which is nothing to be ashamed of.

I think that photography like any other art form is very subjective. Personally, I thought it was a very nice image and I gave it a 7. I think the bright areas really add to it. Great job.

Calling people derogatory names does not advance the discussion ...

Okay. ;-)

First - I'm in agreement that scoring a 6+ in a Freestudy is quite acceptable. :-D

For some reason, this image really resonated with me and I'm still very happy with it. Some of it is likely due to the circumstances in which the photo was captured. My first kayaking adventure with a decent camera (still scared to take my better gear), being on vacation in a serene, peaceful location, and having this scene unfold in front of me.

I know none of the above has any impact on vote distribution ...

In post I struggled with trying to keep the feel of the event versus more pop, etc... The lake was literally glowing with the steam rising and the backlit sun so I made the choice to keep the contrast loose and staying with the brighter background.

The feedback here appears to be representative of the voting range (which is a good thing). I do, very much, appreciate the time that everyone took to comment and share your thoughts on this photo. I'll do my best to return the favor. :-)

Thanks!

I did said 'if', but fair enough. I don't know what other word to use for people who vote low, just to vote low, if those people exist. If they do, I don't think there's a lot of them, just a few.

As a working hypothesis, assume that these are people who don't particularly favor pretty, polished pictures, and prefer their art with rough edges and garlic breath. I say gawd bless 'em all. They're the ones encourage variety IMO. I'm sure we can come up with a better term than "jerks" for them. Maybe "voters" would work? Got any better ideas?

How about "Opinionated", or "Set" or "Judgemental", "Caustic", "discordant"... those are some of the words that might describe the people you allude to.

There are others also.
