Never been to either but both sound very interesting. How crowded are these events?

If the Sand Castle Classic is anything like the Imperial Beach International Sand Castle tournement get there early or you may run into this.

Fortunatly I got there early and was able to get this challenge entry

I hung out for a while and the first picture here was taken around 1 PM.

Ouch. If I saw a crowd like that I think I would just turn and walk away.

I don't think that the crowd at the Leap's Sand Castle Classic is going to be as large as the one awpollard has pictured but you can always grab your kite.

The Dragon Boat Race at Lake Merced is expected to draw lot's of people. Looks like they have shuttles to transport people in from parking areas. They expect 2,500 paddlers to participate in the race itself.

Of course it's a 2 day event so maybe scout a spot on the 1st day and pull out the tele lens on the 2nd day.

After looking at the LEAP site and seeing the dog/firehydrant, I'd wade through a lot of crowds to get one that good!

I looked in on the Dragon Boat Championships a few years ago and there can be some good shots there from several vantage points. It's probably best to get to the lake edge from the parking area near the Boathouse and find the little pier close to the golf course.

When I heard about this event I ordered a wide-angle attachment for my lens. Planning to go to the Sand Castle Classic for sure.

I'm surprise I didn't run into you. Maybe I passed right by you. Well I was there from 12pm-3pm and took 535 shots. The kids that worked on the sand sculptures looked like they all had tons of fun.

Here's a couple more:
