I just did a quick scroll through all of the entries (I always do that before I vote). There are some real stunners in there. There's a few clunkers, but overall, I rate the quality as "high".

i went out of my normal editing comfort zone to try to go with what the crowds seem to like here, and it appears to have worked. my highest score in a long time.

as for stating quality, i think a lot of people are looking to previous hidden gems as proof that there are some absolutely awe inspring images to be found in our collective past, and many people have them but may not have valid exif data on them, others will not want to submit something that was "one shutter click away, but essentialy identical to another entry", and some will just want to submit something fun that they were unable to before for one reason or another.
what classifies "gem" is the same as what classifies "worth entering" to people, and that is purely subjective.
i found that the entries here were about on par with a given "best of" or "free study" challenge. some images are truly moving, captivating pieces of art. some images are people's family and friends in a moment that has special meaning to them. some are akin to interpretive dance and have their own sort of beauty that is lost on casual passers-by because they require a disassociative break from the mainstream to be truly appreciated, and time to be digested.
others are just everyday imagery caught in a moment by a camera.

i learned very quickly what dpc was like when I arrived here and had my illusions cast aside for reality. you have to have a thick skin because there will always be someone who really doesn't like your image, TPL or not. You also have to really enjoy an image you put forth, because if you don't see the merit in it, how can you expect a critically subjective voter to? I think that is the best thing that Mex's friend can take away from this site, and if it happens faster with TPL happening, then they just either have to wait for tpl to finish before jumping into the pool, or they have to learn to swim with sharks and not mind a few bites that are bound to happen.

as far as being back on topic with the thread, my image went back up to a 5.2222 and down to a 5.12 again, but i got another comment, positively so.
That, for me, is what the site is about - receiving feedback from people who actually like your image. knowing that someone out there *gets you* (or your image at least) makes the score not so important in the end. (though higher scores are still appreciated for their own value, especially during TPL)

Don't forget that since this is the fourth "best-of" challenge without time restrictions (even without the annual "best-of" roundups and monthly free studies), many photographers' best photos were already entered.

For all the fear mongers here is a little data to help quell the hysteria of TPL being the reason for low scores.

The last TPL lasted seven weeks so there were 21 challenges.

21 TPL 2 Challenges:
Average Score: 5.61
Average Winning Score: 7.06

21 Challenges post TPL 2:
Average Score: 5.67
Average Winning Score: 7.24

21 Challenges pre TPL 2:
Average Score: 5.72
Average Winning Score: 7.06

We all know that TPL means low scoring site wide. I love to play but I am aware of the demoralizing consequences of group think.
My regret is unwittingly inviting a friend to join during an especially deranged time. My problem is I am feeling protective and wish I had
never mentioned the shark fest that I like to swim in.

Regardless of TPL, I am still voting the same as I have been.... and will be getting more bolder making more comments ..

I am having a blast learning, trying to learn the techniques that others are using , I just wish it showed the data during voting too because usually I don't have time to go back through the pictures afterwards ..
I just wish I had some of the creativity as some of you do

Here is the data in graphical form for those that like pictures. I would say the small differences in scoring are statistically irrelevant and are more likely due to challenge topics rather than some sort of team voting back lash.

' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/35000-39999/38921/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1117177.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/35000-39999/38921/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1117177.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

Damn your statistics! I want to be able to blame someone or something other than my image for my low score! ;-)

As John Adams once stated, "Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."

I've re-arranged the list in your quote to show in chronological order ...

There WAS a decrease in average score of .11, not major, but not insignificant. Then the average went back up after TPL was over.

... and to klkitchens - global climate change is real and man is contributing to it! :-D

Same here...but worse. I think this is one of my best pics ever and looking at my top 5 I know where I could have done better. This one, I really used what I learned from before and really applied it. Not sure how I could improve it and I'm getting frustrated. :(

41 votes, 67 views and a 4.7561, but no comments! Very frustrated indeed.

Edited to add:
Also, reading through the thread, what the heck is TPL?

A flat 6.0 here and slowly falling. I haven't posted in almost two years but I've been keeping in touch. I posted the shot that is true to me now, though it's not necessarily what DPC likes the most. You can never really tell at times so best to just go for it. I have all originals for any shot I've taken and digging deeper than a year ago felt odd. Kept it to less than 18months old. So I kept that challenge for myself. I used to shoot mainly for the challenges. I sort of grew up here. So normally, wouldn't have a Free Study shot LOL. Seriously. If I'd done it purely for score then yes, I would've posted something different. My luck has been good that what I used to shoot coincided with what does well here but it didn't necessarily translate to photography work outside of DPC. Whatever happens, I'm still glad to have posted. Nice to see some ole familiar names. And DPC suprises me all the time. In good ways. The front page is always a treat. Per usual I imagine the really high scorers remain hush hush, so as not to rub it in ;)

I am new to the site. What does TPL mean and why, as some are suggesting, does this adversely effect voting.

It's an unofficial tournament where participants team up and compare average scores to determine a "winner" for the week. Some people assume that a low score must be the result of these teams voting everyone else lower, but there's never been any evidence of that and average scorres are about the same whether a tournament is running or not. If there was no TPL, then the same low scores would be blamed on trolls, DNMC ("does not meet challenge") nazis, buddy voters, poor taste, moon phases, wheat gluten, Justin Beiber or anything else but a lousy photograph.

The TPL is a league where teams of 6 photographers play against other teams in a round robin tournament. The signups are posted, people sign up, and are randomly assigned teams. This was the announcement and you can get the idea.Think of a bowling league, and those not on a team are playing in the lanes not being used by the league.

Anytime there has been one of these leagues there has been a perception that the league players are voting down everything to give their team an advantage, and there often is a slight dip, but a very slight one in average scoring. The biggest change is that the league pulls in photographers who rarely submit, and makes them enter many more challenges than they otherwise would, and the shots from the league have been discussed and polished by team members so they tend to score higher.

The best way to find out what leagues are about is to join in next time, frankly they are the most fun I have on the site these days.

I dont participate in TPL but if people are really voting low on pictures from the other team just to improve their own standing then I think that's childish and negates the whole purpose and intention of TPL. What's the point of winning by cheating? Especially of you vote low on a fabulous shot... That's not fair on that person who may not even be competing!

Anyway, this is my current score....

not to speak out of turn, but even if tpl *did* (which proven data disputes) modify voting, it wouldn't cause it to plunge that low.
sounds like your image just didn't resonate with voters. it happens.

I have just finished voting and have given an average score of 7.0308.
There are some really great photos in there. In fact most of the shots are above average if you ask me. Well done guys.
