RAW files are quite safe from modification, but there are applications and actions that will modify it. I thought I'd gather a list, so we know to avoid those.

For sure I only know of 1 action

- Lightroom export original will insert "Exported from Lightroom" into the RAW file.

What other actions do you guys know that will modify the original? Any experience?

So RAW files are not safe from modification at all in other words.

?

you can't modify a RAW. LR never modifies the RAW file, it creates a sidecar file that stores the changes. If you are exporting its making a new file.

Exactly. It may be tagged "Exported from Lightroom" in the metadata, but that has not changed the RAW data, nor has it invalidated it as an original, as far as I am aware.

Thanks for that, I thought this was weird.

If I use LR6. I import from SD card doing the following:
- Add copyright
- maybe add a metadata tag...
-rename file

Then if I have to submit original for photo challenge, is it fine to just upload cr2 raw from file system?

Unless things have changed since I was on SC, the answer should be "Yes."

RAW files are rarely the issue (i.e. converting to DNG and providing the DNG as the original is NOT considered an "original" file). The problems with altered files is mostly with JPGs and the transfer method from memory card to computer that is utilized.

I insert a bunch of copyright information in my import and have never had an issue with the SC regarding a RAW file submitted for verification. The metadata may be stored in the catalog/sidecar and only applied to images derived from it (JPEG/TIFF/PSD). As said, DNG files are not original RAW, but you can opt to store the full RAW file within the DNG which will allow future extraction of the original, but it makes for larger files and removes any conceivable advantage of using the DNG format.
