OK, that's good to hear. I'm leaving a site where the photos are given high scores based on who's taking the shot and not the shot itself.

Aplasse, people are just making the comments here up. They have nothing to do with his actual photos and the thread is intended as a joke :) There is no way people can tell which entries are taken by what photographer (Unless they are self portraits).

Actually, If anyone knew which photos were mine, I would probably be given LOW scores, since I'm lacking the basic skills of polite human interaction! This thread is a JOKE and any comments on my (fake) submitions is greatly appreciated! It's a good lesson in writing critiques!

Smoke: exellent use of the reflecting surfaces here. I really like how you have captured multiple images of your subject in such interesting ways from such a clever point of view.

Mirrors: the wispy trails from the cigar are very evocative and take me back to those carfree childhood days spent sitting on a hill, looking up at the sky and finding pictures in the clouds. a bit overexposed in the lower left corner, though.

:)

Your smoky one was so realistic that it made me reach for the fire extinquisher! Yes, this is one time when Hot Spots are desired and you made full use of this fascinating technique. Meets the challenge perfectly, therefore a perfect 10!

On the other hand, your mirror image was a magnificant study in perception. This splendid idea is the most original I have seen in this category. I wish it was mine! It's hard to give out so many 10s in one week, but (!) this is an exceptional week!

Your smoke entry will do better than the mirror.
Mirror: This is not a traditional mirror shot! Where's the frame? And where's the wall that mirrors normally hang on? And where's the model mooning at herself in the mirror? Doesn't fit my idea of a good mirror shot!! I know you're an artist and all, but... Okay, okay fine. A grudging 7. :D
Smoke: That's not smoke, it's steam. It just won't do. For me, you need good solid black smoke. Thick, dark and ugly, so it fills up the whole frame. In fact, I was looking forward to a plain gray shot. Everyone here has disappointed me. But it's still better than the mirror shot... A (Still grudging) 9.
:D. This is a good thread :))

I don't know why you posted a photograph of mountains in the mirror challenge. What were you thinking? I think this would fit in the smoke challenge because of the mist rising from the forest. It's a beautiful photograph though.

As for your entry in the smoke challenge, I have no idea what to say. The smoke is so thick, you can't see anything.

Smoke - What were you thinking ?!? Do you not know the difference between smoke and steam ? Does not meet the challenge, IMHO. (1)

Mirror - Subject is OOF, don't like the crop either. The image is too soft, too much NeatImage used. The challenge stated that the use of a mirror must be obvious, yours is just a reflective surface, therefore it does not meet the challenge ! (-1)

Wow everyone!!!

Thanks so much for all of the feedback :)
here are my out takes photos on the smoke and mirrors challenges.

What do you think?
would I have maybe fared better?
Do they really express "smoke" and "mirrors"?

more comments and suggestions on the submitted photos would be great!

Yes...yes it does. Think dude - if a puff of smoke looks blah and boring in color, what makes you think that converting it to b&w and adding that "artistic" grain effect makes it any more interesting? I sure hope you do better with your other hobbies. Do us all a favor and trade your camera in for a couple of books or something. If I could give this a zero I would. Jeez.

I took your shot into Photoshop and measured the stream of smoke in your posted pic versus your challenge entry....I also printed your photo after enlarging it to 1000% and I have uselessly and needlessly counted and measured each and every one of the 25 million sharpened pixels in your photo to prove you wrong and can now say....they are the same picture, Eric. Also you may want to clean your sensor as I spotted a speck of dust while counting and measuring your pixels.

What do you think?

Sigh. The one with the rabbit and the hat and the smoke and the cute little mirror, and the scarves and the pretty girl. How can one exhibit so much talent in one photograph. Somehow, Eric, you've done it all.
