Well, I might as well hang it up... a 14 year old child has left a comment that one of my challenge entries was "rather unoriginal".

I'm usually pretty good at letting such comments roll off my back but jeez! That one takes the cake!

I got the same kind of comment for a 14 yr old kid. Don't let it bother you. Maybe the same person.

Which Picture? Well, after the contest, tell me! I'd like to see what the child progeny, er ah I mean prodigy, has photographed!

Hey, I know you're going to hear this plenty around here but, don't sweat it. I havn't been scoring real high either, and some of the comments on my photos (see my profile) are not so nice, refering to what is in it as opposed to if it met the challenge and etc. What I think you must realize with this site (and I've not seen many posts touching on this particular statement) is that you have to wonder, are you shooting because you liked it? or because you thought others would like it? Because in my experience, these are completely different.

I know it's harsh hearing a child tell you you're no good, but think of the source. What does a 14 year old know about your style? What does a 14 year old know about pretty much anything other than hating their parents because they didn't get a bicycle for x-mas. I am not sure which one of your shots was commented on but I doubt a 14 year old teenager is the upmost authority on what is good and what isn't. They only know what they like. Perhaps it's not that persons particular liking.

If you shoot for you and people don't like it, who cares, the 'mona lisa' wasn't always a master piece, it was once just a portrait of some chubby cheek lady. it was until hundreds of years later that it was thought of as 'great'.

Keep on shooting, for yourself if nothing else. Don't let your art be raped by ignorant folks. :)

That's because your pic did not include, "ninja robots from the future with fake boobs going down a river without a paddle and ending-up having sex with a pie"

you have to think about that demographic segment whe you're shooting!

i'll try to keep that in mind :)

Ellen like a lot of us here we know your work and "Un original" does not fit into it.

I think its just 14 year old hormones talking, he/she is probably doing everything they could to upset the world at the moment!

Or correct a broken ego by using your photo as a stepping stone to a higher, falsified score.

I actually had someone comment that I should should have used a real flower in my 'backlighting' entry, even when the name said 'falsified flower'. Like it matters if the flower is real or not, but go figure.

Some will like stuff and some wont. You can't please everyone everyday, and today isn't juniors day. :)

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your encouraging comments!

And yes, Magicshutter, the shooting will go on! I'm not going to let the little... um, I mean the child hinder my creativity.

You don't generally leave nasty comments, do you?

(No, it wasn't you :-)

I obviously don't know the whole story, but saying that a photo is "rather unoriginal" doesn't sound like a nasty comment in and of itself.

I couldn't care less that it came from a 14 year old 'kid'...sure this 'kid' probably has lots to learn, but why be so dismissive about this comment (unless there was more to it).

Maybe I'm missing something...

Of course they are, they're the ones creating the kids in the first place.

I thought the storks made us....?

Back to the original point tho: What does it matter what the age of the commenter was? If they find it unoriginal at 14, I doubt they would find it any more original after living for longer and seeing more. Everyone's opinion is just as valid as the next person's, whether they be a pensioner or a toddler.

Perhaps 'nasty' was too strong a word; Lets exchange it for 'hateful'. And I will be the first to say that there are some kids, 14 & otherwise, that are truly wise beyond their years - and talented! Unfortunately, the one in question is neither. Of course, I mean that in the nicest way possible!

You are absolutely right! But, as has been discussed many times before, there are nicer ways to share an opinion.

Ya know, I don't want this thread to turn into another bitchfest. I got a comment that hurt my feelings and I received some very nice encouragement which has helped me to get over it much more quickly. Thanks again!

Had about a dozen photographers over to my house Monday night. Many displayed photos and then had discussion and critique from the group. It was agreed: 1) You have to be honest in presenting your views when doing a critique - no one benefits from just being polite; 2) Don't hold back; no comment can be as bad as a poorly made comment; and 3) Each and every image is going to be looked at by a large group of viewers with a range of results running the gamut from "absolutely fantastic" to "really gross", since everyone sees everything differently. It's just the nature of the game.
