I'm starting to get occasional requests to sell my work. I was asked today for a pricing on a 10x14 print of a local scene to decorate an office. How much do folks generally charge for a print?

I don't sell many prints, so I'm not sure if I price things too high or too low, but right now I have my 10x15 prints priced at $24 (if customer orders unmounted print directly from DPC Prints) ...

That's in the neighborhood of what I was thinking. Thanks.

My 11x14 matted prints sell for $36.95. They are signed, numbered, matted and packaged in clear bags, which is also the name of the company who makes them.

16x20 @ $78.95
18x24 @ $84.95

Just make sure you're covering your costs, including shipping. If you're doing it for the heck of it, then that's a fair price. If you're looking to do this for a living, then waaaay too cheap.

I charge about the same hahn23 does, for a very similar presentation. I also encourage them to get the framing from me, because it only takes about half an hour to do a nice custom frame job, and I can make more money on the framing than the print. Sad, I suppose, but true.

If you're talking to me, yes I do this for a living. Pricing is based on a 3x markup and is carefully calculated to assure a target volume of sales. If you're talking to someone else, then nevermind.

After I started selling to/through a gallery, I raised all my prices, so as not to undercut them, and also to ensure I made a fair profit either way.

IMHO it's art and you should be able to sell without a "commodity" pricing model.

On DPCPrints, I charge $59 for 10x15, $89 for 12x18, and $149 for 16x20. Those prices are in fact old (I need to update them). My basic price model on my regular web site (Zenfolio) is now: $39 for 8x12, $75 for 10x15, $125 for 12x18, and $175 for 16x20. A 16x24 Canvas print (3/4") is $350.

You won't sell quantity that way, but you're showing your customers that your photos have value. Some will pay, some of course won't.

Just my own opinion. Others who run their own galleries sell a lot more, and I'm sure their pricing is good for more sales. (I don't make a living this way.)

Sorry, that was meant for Steve, the OP

We have about 22 consignment accounts of artists also selling their pottery, paintings, fiber art, jewelry, wooden bowls, etc., in our gallery. In general, these artists set their own prices. We see a lot of pricing mistakes. One can charge what the market will bear. An awareness of the price at which your art moves is important. The economy, consumer mood, the season and the weather are some of factors which affect the market. We do offer occasional off-season discounts but are careful to avoid always offering a discount, lest that becomes one's pricing model.

For my market, I charge $36.95 for a matted 11x14. If I were to charge $59, I would sell very few and my inventory would build to an unhealthy level.

As an aside, my matted prints are always offered in standard mat sizes: 11x14; 16x20; 18x24, etc. Those fit standard frames available at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. Custom frames are expensive.

this guy offered, "I use a formula .42 x height in inches x width in inches. Round to the nearest dollar."

so simple, and so rational.

4x6 - $10
5x7 - $15
8x10 - $34
11x14 - $65
16x20 - $135
20x24 - $202
20x30 - $252

works for me ;-)

these are higher prices than richard charges, but i don't make my living from selling prints, per se. by the same token, you can use whatever factor you're comfortable with. the key is to come up with something that works for you, that makes sense, and that you can stick with so that you aren't forced to price on the fly every time someone asks you for a price.

here is the discussion on the quote above and here is another thread on pricing.

congrats & good luck! it's always nice to pick up a few bucks when you weren't planning on it.

Good to know That I was not too far off in my pricing at all, I just recently had to throw prices together for a few things I had taken, I did not think it was that great, but people thought they were and wanted it for their home especially a few prints of my eagle pictures.

I am $5.00 cheaper than what Skip offers for a few of them, and I have no problem selling them.. and it is just the prints only. but the largest size I sold was a 16x20 for $95.00..my 11X14 I sold for matted $40.00, so knowing I was close enough I am pleased with .. it is great to have that confirmation on things.
I haven't yet had to go up from the 16x20 yet, so I am not sure on how that would work for pricing...

I have not yet had to "frame" anything so I am out of the price range for that..I was really hoping to get together with someone who frames professionally but I am not ready to take that step yet since I am still learning.
