I met up with Phill in Narita and we went to the temple for some serious shooting then had a real nice curry at CoCo-ichi and we went to a very good camera shop in Usui that sells secondhand stuff. The guy in the shop was extremely helpful and generous that Phill and I both bought a new lens. Phill managed top get a Sigma EX 105 Macro for his Canon Rebel and I couldn't resist getting the fixed Ai 85mm f1.4s for my Nikon D70. I don't know how Phill is getting on with his new lens but I have fallen head over heals in love with mine. I'm off out for some shooting today I have to go to tokyo. Allthough the 85mm is a portrait lens and is running at 127mm on the D70 i will still take it everywhere along with my trusty 28-200mm Nikkor.

Just wanted to say thank you to Phill I had a great day and he is a really nice bloke hope to meet up again very soon.

Anybody else in Japan fancy meeting up then we could have a small group and maybe arrange a weekend or something.. let me know please.

BTW- These Ai super fast lenses ROCK!!! that's R-O-C-K "ROCK" bring on the 35mm version.

Thanks right back at you, Marac. It was a great day and I'm really psyched about my new lens too. I've been running around taking stupidly close-up shots of everything around my house. I just found out from my picture of a 500-yen coin that there are tiny "500"s inside the big "0"s on the coin. Cool!

I'm going to go through the photos in a bit and will post a few in this thread. Thanks for showing me around Narita, Marac, and I hope to meet with you, and maybe some other Japan DPCers soon as well.

Marac
Philip and family played tour guide for us last June. We had a great time and saw much more in the few hours with them than we ever would have on our own. He has the cutest daughters (my son Spencer will confirm that) Can't wait to see photos from the both of you!

hey guys! I'm so glad the meeting was fruitful. Now I know who to call next time I'm in japan! :)

I slid your thread over to "out and about" though, since it seemed to be more about that than hardware. ;)

Thanks for moving the thread, Pam.

Here are a few pics from the day with Marac at Narita-san Temple. I'll post a few from the new Sigma 105 macro lens in a different thread soon. Hope you enjoy the pics!

Forgive me for straying from the [photography] subject but I'm just dying of curiosity! Do you both live in Japan? Did you move from America? If so, what made you choose Japan? Has it been difficult to make the transition to the different culture?

Hi Ellen,

Yes, Marac and I both live in Japan. I moved here from America last year and Marac has been here for about 7 years, I believe.

I came here because my wife got a great job teaching at a university here, and I'm a writer so I can do that from anywhere. You'll note that I'm particularly adept at run-on sentences. ;-) We lived here for 3 years right out of college and really enjoyed it, so we thought it would be nice to bring the girls (5 and 10) back for awhile to experience the culture first-hand. They're both in regular Japanese school and are doing pretty well after some initial culture shock.

It is a bit difficult to make the transition into such a different culture, but it's also very worthwhile. I just like the fact that Japan happens to be a particularly photogenic country. :-) Feel free to PM me if you would like to know anything else about this.
