Separation into "workshop" and "showcase" didn't work out. People did not workshop their essays and seemed to do better with a deadline. How should we do the next one?

Maybe one thread for posting essays for the rest of the month?

And when the month is over a showcase thread where all the essays are posted at once?

Damn it's supposed to say format. I think my title got autocorrected. If an sc could fix it, I would be very appreciative.

:-) I hate spell-checkers (most of the time) ...

If everybody linked their photo essay to an image on DPC we could all send you or somebody else the ID of this picture. When the deadline date is reached you could start a new forum and post all the title page thumbnails at once. Any comments made after that would be fine. You could even allow the participants to include a brief text message about their photo essay and post that too.

Just an idea. I'm happy to go along with whatever you guys come up with.

How about let this thread be for "Discussion and Previews" (I can change the title again), and then post a "Showcase" thread for everyone to post at once; any "previews" in the earlier thread would be voluntary, and probably sparse as before.

Without a system for "nesting" the threads there's really no convenient way to keep the discussion orderly. One possible workaround would be to require everyone to post (at least) the first page (a title page?) of their project here at DPC. We could then place those thumbs in the Showcase thread and then immediately lock the thread, and the discussion of each person's essay can occur on that first-page photo, keeping all of the comments on that essay in one place. If the rest of the essay is hosted elsewhere the photographer can put the link the in notes section of the first/title page.

Discussion of the overall project could remain here in this thread.

Good ideas, guys.

1. Let's rename this thread Discussion and Previews for April Photo Essay Challenge

2. Let's make it a requirement that all photo essays start as a DPC thumbnail, regardless of where they end up. Comments can be collected there.

What happened to March? We posted Feb images at the beg of March, so are we skipping March essays and jumping straight to Aptil?

I don't know what happened to March. I blinked and now March is almost over.

Doing them every other (or third) month is probably a good idea anyway; it lets there be a month of review and discussion of the completed essays while planning for the next one, and I think trying to do one every month will burn people out pretty quickly.

I never got around to commenting on all the Februaries... Truly they were easier to ponder than to pontificate upon.

I too, with the little time that I have, could not truly give justice to the entries in writing. Just revel in their viewing.

With that in mind, I'll throw my depersonalization disorder photography into the pot for April essay ' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/115000-119999/119419/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1107951.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/115000-119999/119419/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_1107951.jpg', '/') + 1) . I put this together for March but April will do just fine.

I am another one thinking of posting an illustrated blog here. As I read ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' insteps blog, I felt an impulse to let the words change the way I saw the pictures. I felt another impulse to add my own words, sometimes in disagreement. That felt a little presumptuous. It holds me back from commenting.

Is the combination of words & pictures better if it's more like a storybook? Entertaining, interesting, but not sparking any independent outside-the-story thoughts in the viewer? I'm wondering how I find that fine line between 'blog' and 'story.' And if I want the viewer to feel free to disagree with me, or add their comments to mine, how do I make that plain?

I enjoyed reading the February photoessays by Paul and Don. That influenced my decision to write something in blog format. I'm hoping you don't compare mine to theirs but I thought it would be fun to give it a try. My previous two photo essay attempts were more galleries of images with limited writing. Please feel free to critique what I've offered. Agree or not, I love to hear different ideas.

I think using a blog format makes that plain. I would have done it that way if I weren't so lazy busy.

It's a blog.

It's also in my portfolio.
Any & all comments welcome.
