SO I am taking the kiddies to their grandparents in Depoe Bay OR. Then I am nipping up to Sequim WA then Hawaii for two weeks.

SO the part of the trip is one of those, beach, educational, mostly camping , fun things, but for me to also get a kick up the arse to take photos again;

This is the route we are taking. Anyone want to meet up along the route or have some great ideas as to where else I/we ((3 kids) can stop along the way?

Actually, I take that back. When you get up to washington, hit the Olympic Peninsula. I thought that was one of the most wonderful places!!

MaryO and Jutilda are planning a grand adventure to Seattle in July. You should come then. It would make the inevitable GTG even more epic.

You'll see more sun along most of your route if you come during July as well.

Beyond that, Hearst castle is crazy. It's in the middle of absolute nowhere, but not to be missed. Plan 3x as long to drive Big Sur than it looks like it should take. And make sure you get a picture of the Giant Artichoke.

Link doesn't show up correctly on my (old) computers (blurry, no navigation available), but if you're driving up the Pacific Coast Highway you should get info from Bear_Music -- he is very familiar with the area ... I've been able to take a couple of photo excursions with him in the Big Sur/Monterey area. Hearst Castle is pretty amazing, but probably also pretty expensive, and you may well need reservations, and even when I went (decades ago) there were three separate tours from which you had to pick. A classic spot for photography in the region is Point Lobos State Preserve between Big Sur and Monterey. The Asilomar Conference center is also nearby, and if you do the Hearst Castle thing it might make for an interesting comparison, as both were designed by Julia Morgan, perhaps the country's most famous female architect.

Let me know if you'll be passing through the Berkeley/Oakland/East Bay area ... if you drive North on US 101 then you should make a slight detour through the Avenue of the Giants to see some big trees ... Well, I have to be in Depoe bay by the 29th, so I can leave May 29th if I wanted. Then it is just 300 miles to Sequim WA, so will have a week or two between that till I go to the photo shoot in HI, land back in WA, on the 29th then pick up kids and drive solidly for 3 days to get them back to school on time ! eekk

SO a GTG works for me anytime

And for a change, I am quite sure the car was stopped at the time.

Just got this nice shot from the ISS) of the California coast ... Big Sur is about where the words "Pacific Ocean" appear (the "wavy" part of the coast) ...

I have to be in Depoe Bay by the 29th, Seattle is only 300 odd miles, so anytime after that would be great!

If it were up to me, I'd stick you in Big Sur for the whole time, to relax and commune with the great photographers. Let me know if you are gonna do anything more than drive through on the way up the coast, and we'll talk. If it's just a drive-by (and it's a MUST to at least do that), then plan your timing to eat a meal at Nepenthe, which has been there forever and was a favored hangout of writers and artists for a long time. It's somewhat more upscale now, but it's absolutely stunning. Check out the shop downstairs too, for genuine local crafts. The art community ofat Big Sur is exceptionally talented.

Are you even slowing down at L.A. or are you zipping by...?

:(

A couple or three side trips:

Oregon Dunes Recreation Area, near Florence, OR.
I think this may be too late for your time frame, but Sequim has a lavender festival the third weekend of July every year, they are a major producer of lavender.
If you have the time I would really recommend you go from Sequim up the road to Port Angeles and from there take the road up to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, some very nice vistas there and great photography opportunities!

Was looking at the lavender fields, but that is more into the middle of July. I am going to take my own time going from Depoe Bay to Sequim, so I can take 2 weeks to mooch about! Already going to that forest of fantasy, (rain Forest) perfect opportunity for a paid workshop up there!!!

LOL< I am not paying a thing, if we do a workshop then it is 50/50, sorry being published n Vogue Italia, V UK and Japanese Vogue, then NT Geo means people pay . Actually, I think they would just pay for the black dress and not me LOL

I am now at the point that I am thinking of getting a small UHaul thingy to bring all the dresses up to Sequim and then Hawaii.

big gamble, and I have never won on a gamble.

The only thing set in stone is, that I am Depoe Bay by the 29th June. Kids get out of school on the 23rd of May.

we shall see! =|
