In site comments, I often find myself typing ''Depth of Field'' or ''Longer Exposure'' thinking in the back of my mind that someone will read it and think ''DOF? WTF?''.

Perhaps technical terms in comments yould be automagically linked or a tooltip icon that you hover to get a basic idea and click on to get a full explanation.

Sounds like Microsoft's Smart Tags. Can get possibly messy. After all, you've always got Google.

Good idea!

I know something similar is on a wishlist of future features -- basically a feature that would parse the comments on a photo for technical terms, and then at the bottom of the page give a list of userful links, perhaps to definitions or tutorials as appropriate.

Key to this, though, is getting a good database of tutorials together. Remember that anyone can write a tutorial at any time, so if you'd like to write one let us know!
