i use scan disk. dunno if its the fastest tho but it suits my needs. I think if you have usb 2.0 posts, than a carder reader that is also usb 2.0 is the way to go!

Do you mean 2.0 ports?

I would NOT get the Lexar USB 2.0 MultiCard reader. Bad customer service on mine. I bought some Sandisk 512 Ultra II cards that don't work in it. Emailed Leexar about it after I saw there was a firmware/software upgrade for Windows, but not Mac. What it comes down to is me shipping it to them (at my expense of course) and they will upgrade it and send it back.
I told them, how's about you send me a check for what it costs to replace it, I will go buy the new revision, and then ship you the old one. Of course they won't go for that. (C:
So, I am just going to buy a new one of a different brand..not worth the time and energy to ship it off and wait weeks on end.

I have a Lexar USB card reader, quite like it for quick plugging into other PC's.

However, my main card reader I have is the Lexar Firewire reader. It is sensational, wonderfully fast.

If you have firewire I would go for one of those.

i have sandisk usb 2.0 , works great and you can easily compare that with firewire 400.

good buy but go for usb2.0

Performance Comparison - FireWire vs. USB 2.0
Read and write tests to the same IDE hard drive connected using FireWire and then USB 2.0 show:

    Read Test:

5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 33% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 70% faster than USB 2.0

    Write Test:

5000 files (300 MB total) FireWire was 16% faster than USB 2.0
160 files (650MB total) FireWire was 48% faster than USB 2.0

...As the performance comparison shown above confirms, FireWire remains the performance leader.  And is the best choice for DV camcorders, digital audio and video devices, external hard drives, high-performance DVD burners and any other device that demands continuous high performance throughput.

You beat me to it there Zeusen, I was just going to go find some performance comparisons.

USB 2 is fantastic ... but if you have firewire it is a faster option.

Advantage to USB I guess though is that you are more likely to be able to plug your reader into someone elses PC, but for your own use I'd go firewire everytime.

I guess it depends what the actual question here is ...

And fastest won't be USB.

If you don't have USB 2.0 or Firewire, you can get a PCI card to add them.

Ok, I thought that it would have to USB, except for Firewire. My laptop is a couple years old, but it still runs great. However, it does not have firewire capabilities. So, when it comes down it, save for Firewire, what is the best CF card reader to download pictures from my Sandisk Ultra II 512mb?

I don't know how much difference the brand of reader will make. I think most are very similar, assuming they are USB 1 OR USB 2.

If I had to select, I think I;d go for whatever make the card is, but I do not have anything solid to base that on.

Speaking of my laptop being 2 years old, would anyone know if it is usb 2.0 compatible?

As before...I think I am going to pass on Lexar now. Going to look for the FireWire 400..if they have an 800 I will get that one then. (since me Mac will use an 800

Probably not, most likely it is USB 1.1. USB 2.0 devices will work correctly but just not as fast as they would if your computer was 2.0.

As coolhar posted, your laptop prolly has only USB 1.1, your docs can confirm this. But the fact that you are on a laptop gives you another option.
Normally a CF adapter for a PCMCIA slot is just a mechanical interface, since the CF card contains all the necessary interface circuitry. The Delkin adapters do contain electronics, though, and speed up the transfer significantly. Claim is that they are actually faster than FireWire (not FireWire 800 of course).
The PCMCIA adapters are really convenient, since you carry nothing extra but the adapter, which can stay in the slot.

is there a certain brand of adapter, or are they all about the same?
I really appreciate all the help you guys are giving me!

Another similar option for an older laptop (I have a Mac G3 Powerbook) is to get a FireWire adapter card for the PCMCIA slot. I found one with adatper cables to allow it to connect to either FireWire or USB.

The particular adapter linked in my message is vey much faster than the purely mechanical adapters. If you need speed, that may be your most convenient solution.

So the Delkin CardBus CF adapter would be my best bet then for sure?

Er, I think that's the one I just bought - only out of necessity. I hate have time limits, makes for poor purchases. But at $60CND it atleast came with a one year warranty.
