"The eyes have it!!"

Lovely photo full of charm and vulnerability. If you're a parent you'll understand.

However, I am not sure weither the "purists" would consider it to be sharp enough.

Is that an NG tube at the top?

Go for it!!

I will probably raise my hand as a parent AND a purist! :-)

I don't think this is a strong image at all. However, if it is an image that means something to you, then by all means go for it!

What do I mean by not a strong image? Well, I think that the "point" of this image is the eyes, and they are not in focus, and I think your angle is off. The eyes just don't pop out to me...

Just my thoughts!

It is a nice shot, but the coloring seems a bit dull and the tube looks like it is coming out of the baby's head.

Cute!

Hi,
thanks for the feed back. To the above, yes this was an NG tube.
The picture was taken very much on thespur of the moment. My baby boy had an operation at 16 hours old, this was 2 days after that operation. the nurse wrapped him up as i got there. I saw the image and ran for my camera. not much though into sharpness/colour/ or anything but to capture a one off moment.

again thanks or the feedback. i can use this going forward when i plan my pictures

Sometimes, I honestly despair.

I realy wonder if the artistry and polish of contemporary photography with all the technical capability of modern equipment has blinded us to the fundamentals of the human experience.

This is a snapshot of a newborn taken by a proud and frightened father.

It is simple, honest and profound.

The image for me perfectly captures the essence of vulnerability and dependance. The swaddling emphasizes both institutional care and total control over the infant. The plaintive eyes evoke an impression of fear, confusion and absolute supplication.

This is not a beautifully crafted image of a perfect sunset or a clever and witty interpritation of an obscure challenge theme. It is far far better than that!

There is real artistry in working with what you have. Take stock of the positive aspects of the image. You saw/felt something very strong in the scene and you had the presence of mind to capture it.

I would suggest enhancing the aspects that Fibonacci commented on.
Increase the contrast, sharpen it if it will handle it. Converting this to Black and White could make it look colder and a bit edgey. Sepia tones would make it more nostalgic. You could crop it just around the eyes with a bit of fabric above and below.

Asses how the image makes you feel a do to it whatever makes the feeling stronger.

If you end up with something suitable for a contest as well then great.
