Not sure why there is a two week submission period. This is for images captured in 2013! It's not like anyone willl go out and shoot for this challenge. It would have been better to have a two week voting period to give the voters and jury more time and a much shorter submission period. But, it is what it is. Sometimes, DPC enables procrastinators.

Since I was on sabbatical, :), I missed the first two of these, but have looked back through the entries in the past two and am curious as to the genesis and expectations for this challenge. The entries in general, and most of the top winners, are great photographs, but the rub is they do not appear (perhaps only to jaded eyes) to be much different from a regular free study or best of challenge, as compared, say, to the juried Fine Arts challenges that was run in 2010.

Perhaps it is just me and the recent challenges just reflect the evolution of that challenge, this site and the voters. I really am not throwing stones or trying to start a "what is art" discussion that has no answer here. I am just genuinely interested in what you (and what you think the voters are) looking for in this challenge that is fundamentally different from a FS or Best of challenge.

expert would be nice for a chance.

I agree. I've been thinking about it a bit. Ooh. I'm having trouble explaining what I'm thinking. I guess, when you took the photo were you trying to produce art or trying to apply your style to something more arty (huh?). For me, a filled frame of leaves isn't something I would shoot normally, but I might try to to create an abstract piece (but not for a topic or challenge). Certainly in my style, but not a photo, a picture. Does it make any sense?

Perhaps, but for me expert isn't photography. It's painting.

Best-of-Year challenges have always had a 2-week submission window. The thinking is, it takes a lot of time to comb through a year's worth of images and prune them to a manageable set of candidates. As for 2-week voting periods, I seem to recall that was tried once and voting basically started with a burst (as usual), ran out of steam for a week, then picked up at the end. Meanwhile, folks were complaining they wanted to "see some RESULTS, already!"

So basically, it is what it is, as you so wisely opined :-)

Are juries being convened?

And, will the jurors take into consideration links to larger size images of challenge entries. The 800 pixel constraint is a very formidable impediment to a fair display. The small size display changes the choice of subject and composition. What if Ansel Adams or David Muench had been told to never print larger than 5"x7"?

Yes, a jury has been convened. And no, the jurors can't work with larger-sized images because those are only visible after the voting has ended.

I tried to get some new blood in the group, but also insisted it be people who can express why they like something. For me, the comments are more important than the selections. That being said, everyone will have equal sway in picking the winners.

While I don't disagree that the 800 pixel limit can be constraining, this is like any other opportunity to show off your work: Make your selection with the exhibit space in mind. For now, it is what it is, and we're all on equal footing. As for the 5x7 analogy, there are photographers who contact print 35mm frames and display them. (Granted, Ansel wasn't one of them.)

I'd like to volunteer to be on the jury next time there's a jury group selected. If picked of course ;) but putting my name in the hat.

Very good, you will have some exciting discussions no doubt, and you might learn a thing or too.

All the best.

Let's reopen the discussion for the editing category for this type of challenge.

My most exciting and artistic shots are in the expert rule set, so I pretty much know anything I would want to enter will be automatically disqualified. I also have to go back in my thousands and thousands of files and try to figure out, specifically , for this challenge whether or not I will be breaking the advanced rules........STIFFLING....to a certain degree.....digging back into files to see WHAT the heck I did with each one........

Any chance you are all going to open up the possibilities and let us rip with all the digital processing available to us on computers in a future "Art of...20__" ?

Otherwise I may just enter another photograph of one of my paintings..... and that's not what I want to do.

Since you need to have the original file available anyway, it doesn't really matter how you edited it in the past; you can re-edit the picture you like according to the current rules.
