Hello everybody,
i am thinking of getting a 50mm lens for my D70, just wondering if it is worth the extra money to get the 1.4D instead of the 1.8D, the reviews i have seen are not very conclusive, does anybody have one or the other and any advice?
Thanks.

If the difference is not obvious for you just get 1.8 - to save money. But my advise would be getting 35/2.0 which translates to 52mm with crop factor - the nicest lens I have seen so far. This guy's gallery is all done with 35/2.0 on D100:

I just bought the 1.8D. The main factor was the money. My other lens is the 28-200 f/5.6 or something really slow like that, so the 1.8 made a huge difference and I didn't feel the 1.4 would be worth the extra $$. It's a fun little lens!

I love the 50mm 1.8. Price is extraordinary, sharp as a tack, and (I wouldn't think) much of a difference from the 1.4. It is built very solid.
Great portrait lens!, by the way

I got the 1.8 too....best bang for buck....I find it really sharp and the DOF is great. Focusing is very fast...Don't know about the 1.4 sorry.

Handheld at 1/60th from my apartment window. :)

So how many of us ended up with this lens yesterday?

I avoided the 50mm focal length due to the construction quality of this series of lenses - mostly plastic. I have a zoom lens (AF-S 28-70mm f2.8D) that easily covers the 50 mm focal length. As well, I opted for two very fast fixed focal length lenses (28mm f1.4D and 85mm f1.4D IF) of superior construction that also offer the low light capability that I wanted.

But if you can't afford the more expensive (although higher quality) lenses, the 50mm f1.8 is a good lens to start with.

can't beat the price on the 50/1.8... for a super clear and sharp lense, for that price,... i just had to have one, and now that i do, i find that i use it much more than i thought i would. truly a great lense!

I was thinking of buying the Nikkor AF 1.8 50 mm lense.
But now I am leaning towards the VERY sharp 1:1 Sigma AF 2.8 50mm Macro EX

I have both. The f/1.8 and the f/1.4

Have had the 1.8 the longest and have zero complaints. Picked up the 1.4 off ebay as part of a Nikon 6006 package including a vast aray of filters.

Honestly, there is no reason that I needed the 1.4, however with the upgrades in other Nikkors, it seemed like a good idea, and the price was right. So far there is no shot that the 1.4 has allowed me to get that the 1.8 could not have also acheived.

The D series 50mm f/1.8 is rated at nearly a [5] (highest rating) by various serious shooters. There is the "plasticky" feel of the lower end Nikkors that are a mentionable with most reviewers. Morgan is a solid voice in Nikon equipment. I personally value his point of view and have sought out his opinion several times.
