Hi all. Looking to pick the brains of the tech gurus around here. I'm looking for a tablet to travel with. The primary specification is to act as a medium through which I can transfer RAW files from CF/SD card, via card reader, to an external hard drive. Other things I would be looking for are:

decent display screen - after all, I will be looking at lots of pics and showing others!
Windows based (no apples please)
would be nice to install CS (I have a 'spare' activation) and run it reasonably well
run Outlook, MS office programs
lightweight yet robust (a hard keyboard might be nice but certainly not necessary)

Price - obviously as low as possible!!

So, resident tech people, thoughts?

You might ask Cory, because I think he has (had?) a Windows tablet and did a lot of research before he bought.

I've researched it a bit, but not yet done it. An Android tablet could do it, but you would first have to root the device, then install a utility called "Stickmount" to enable mounting of an external flashdrive or card reader. You can view and convert using the RawDroid utility.

I have a Nexus 7 that I am going to try it on when I have some time.

Penny took our Nexus 10 on a trip and was able to do the transfer, but it took a while to figure out the protocols. We have an adaptor that plugs into the micro-USB slot that allows mounting and reading, we installed a utility, we figured out how to read folders, it's not very intuitive. But it works. And the image on Nexus is spectacularly good. But you can't run photoshop on it.

I think you can run Photoshop on the Windows tablet; Cory will know for sure.

Maybe the way to go is with Adobe Touch app & the Creative Cloud. No external HD required, then.

[eta] Ooops sorry, Android & iOS only right now. PS--I've tried Android and WIN8 tablets & like Android better. JMO.

With my RX100, I shoot RAW+JPEG, then transfer the jpegs to the iPad using wifi. Very easy. It takes three button pushes on the camera, and two on the iPad. I wish my DSLR could do that using something besides those stupid eye-fi cards. If the shot needs minor editing, I use snapseed. The images look amazing on the iPad. I have a new appreciation for the jpeg engines in modern cameras. About once a week, I transfer all of the RAW files from card to desktop and do any real editing they might need.

Editing RAW images from my DSLR when traveling? I use a MacBook Air and Lightroom to make picks and do minor corrections. I save the heavy lifting until I get home to a beefier machine.

edit: oh, yeah, sorry. The Sony app is only iOS and Android. No Windows.

edit2: any of this could be done with an Android tablet as well, and a well chosen Android tablet might save some money over an iPad. Few of the common mobile apps are available for Windows, so you're in a different world. Basically, you're trying to buy a Windows laptop with a touchscreen. That's great if that's what you want, but it's going to be both heavier and more expensive than the iOS or Android options.

I have a surface pro 1 that works just nice, I also have a 64GB mini SD card as not to clog up the system drive with photos .. it is small yet powerful enough for anything I need to do on the move.

This unit would be mainly used for transferring pics from CF card to an external hard drive when travelling. All the rest of the bits (apart from screen display) would be nice added extras, but not 'necessary'. I would like to run Outlook mainly when travelling to check my emails in a way with which I am familiar, but can't honestly foresee myself using it for docs or ssheets etc.

I *may* do some basic editing when travelling, but if my past adventures are anything to go by, it would only be a few pics and the heavy lifting would be done at home.

I've not used Lightroom, but potentially that sounds like a better option for the 'travelpad'?

Eta: and my main query is the mechanics of transferring from card to external harddrive - would I need anything other than the usb card reader I already have or would I need a powered usb card reader? How many usb ports does the Surface have?

Pam have you checked out the "deals" thread for the free software that is similar to Lightroom? I played with it for a few minutes and for the price is was nice. And handled RAW files from my D4 just fine.

Deals thread.

I have the Sony Vaio version of the tablet/convertible.

8G ram Intel 7i processor, 256G SSD. It's about 10 months old. Very reliable. The pen works very well. Nice sharp tip, makes it nice for editing. Runs Photoshop with no problem. Screen seems pretty accurate. I calibrate my desktop display. I have not seen the need for the Sony. Has a built in SD card reader. Only wish would be that CF would be native as well. Though I have a pocket CF reader that plugs into the USB. A little thicker, and heavier than the surface. But the surface pro was not out when I purchased the Sony.
