I have two versions of this shot - one basically untouched, and one with some obvious editing...I kind of like the isolated color against a drab background in the first one - but I also like the contrast/balance in the second...any opinions? Comments? Thanks!

Looks like you split the plant and made a reverse version and pasted together. I see two buds on the plant that looks different, but still strange. I do like the background on this one. Is that lava?

The links should work better now - bigger copies. Yes, it's lava in the back - on one hand I like the red there as well, but I can't really decide...
The symmetry you don't like so well?

Everyone has a different viewpoint. What'll matter most in the end is what YOU like best. From my perspective, the flowers in the second one are too unnaturally symetrical - and I'd like to see more focus in the top half of the image. From a balance standpoint, maybe there could also be just a tad less space between the flowers and the lava. On the other hand, I like the contrast between the natural flowers in the first photo and the plain rock behind them. Again though, I'd also like more focus on the background rocks in the first image. So, now you have my opinion - but, how do YOU feel?

To me, the symmetry makes it look like some weird alien that's taken on the form of a flower ... actually, the more I look at it, the more it's making my skin crawl ...

I like the first one, but wanted to get more contrast between the flower and the rocks - either by making the plant 'pop out' a little more, or by getting the background to recede more - I tried the symmetry to get a 'pop' and added the lava to create more recession...but can't decide if it's a bit too much or not...
