H'm, stupid me. Took the risk of updating windows 8.0 to 8.1 (a 2 hours wait). Had to share my printer again (not a big problem and my family is happy again), but now I can't use Canon EOS Utility anymore. Going to try to uninstall and install the software, hope that helps. Anyone else here with this problem?

My immediate response would be "Why would you want the Canon EOS Utility in the first place?" I installed it the first time I bought a Canon, but eventually dumped it and have never installed it again.

Simple. Automatic download to the place I want and live view. Can't do without that.

Automatic download doesn't interest me, never has. Live view, THAT would a deal-breaker if I used it, up. So far I haven't...

You should give the download option a try. Plug in your camera into USB, have a cup of coffee (or tea or anything) and your images are ordered by date and ready for processing. Live view is very nice when your camera is connected to a large screen, but I guess it's only useful inside.

Btw. Downloaded the latest version (2.13.25) and installed it. After a reboot all works fine again :) According to the Dutch Canon site automatic startup (when you connect you camera) doesn't work. My guess is they haven't tested that since it works fine by me now.

I don't download from the camera; I use a card reader instead. I have my own organizational system, and I'm an old dog, sir. Don't tempt me with your new tricks, please :-)

Hopefully this won't be an ongoing thread.

I also took the risk and went in for 8.1. My second display can't be detected now. Haven't found anything online about similar problems. Tried all the usual stuff. I'm always a slow adopter, why did I do this?

Like Robert, I don't use the EOS utility to download. I prefer the (much faster) option of using a USB 3.0 card reader. I import directly from the card to Lr, which copies the files and catalogs them, and quickly.
Now, that said, at work I do use the remote shooting (tethering) function of EOS utility and it works like a charm. I especially like the option of magnifying a portion of the live view screen for focusing. I'd really rather tether to Lr, but I'm using a 6D and for some reason tethering is not supported in Lr for the 6D.

Been nervous about switching to Windows 8 for compatibility reasons. Anyone have any issues with LR or PS or MS Office?

I don't see a compelling reason to switch. Yes, it does boot faster, but that is a small benefit. The interface is still an abomination.

Sitting with Windows 7 Pro. I do like keeping current with OS's...but think I'll wait for a few further iterations of 8 before I make the switch.

@ Garry...I'm running Office 2010 on a new laptop with windows 8 and it's fine. I'm used to windows 8 now, and really don't mind it at all. I'm still going to wait on 8.1 though.

My laptop is running Windows 8.0 (I have an HP TM2 convertible with touch screen) and it works fine for everything. I have it set to boot right to the desktop using Pokki (free) as a replacement for the start menu.

However, I tried installing 8.1 today (twice)...it goes through the install, but by the end has a problem (I presume video driver) and automatically reverts to 8.0. Then again, this is a convertible tablet that predates Windows 8, and HP doesn't seem to want to support it, so what can you expect!

But Windows 8 works great on it...much better than 7 for a convertible tablet. (But my desktop is still 7!)

if you use the auto download do you still get the unmolested original photo file?
10/22/2013 02:02:46 PM · #19
Using Windows 8.1 now for a few days. It "feels" slower to me. And a warning for people who needs java (for work or other things): you will have a serious problem :( (at least: I have)

Edit: Found a solution by deinstalling every program which starts with the name "java". Installing the newest JRE (32 and 64 bits) and all works fine again (for the moment).

Don't know where else to post this...

I first turned here because I thought a new Windows Update problem may have been triggered by Google's behind-the-scenes Nik update, but I'm not sure that's the case. Don't know where else to ask, though.

Running Windows 8.1, all has been great. Last night before shutting down I try to run Windows Update (always do manually). Hangs. Entire Control Panel is frozen. All other applications work fine. Access to files fine. Shut down, worry about it this morning.

Same problem this morning. Just clicking the Windows Update link in the Control Panel freezes that entire specific operation. Everything else is fine. All other applications work fine, access to files not a problem... Except if I right-click on a drive. If I right-click on a drive, File Explorer also hangs. But I can open a second session of File Explorer and still access all the files, even while the other window is frozen.

Have run troubleshooting to fix Windows Update problems, and it has stopped Bits service and has been "Starting Bits service" for about an hour. Not working, obviously.

I haven't downloaded or installed a single thing since Nik performed their automatic update, so that's what first came to mind.

Any ideas? Thank you very much for any time spent thinking about this.

Sounds like you have some add-on in your context menu that is causing problems.

Try safe mode first:

//pcsupport.about.com/od/windows-8/ss/windows-8-safe-mode.htm

Then you can use the Nirsoft or similar utility to look at what's in your context menu and systematically eliminate things.

//www.nirsoft.net/utils/shell_menu_view.html

You might also try running ccleaner, it can identify problems in the registry and does a good job generally cleaning up problems. I've been using it for several years without incident.

Thanks a lot, Neil. Getting under the hood...
02/05/2014 12:51:09 PM · #24
Resolved. Following Neil's safe-mode advice I was able to get the exact error message code, and then some googling took me to this set of instructions from MS. All is well now, but I wish I could pinpoint the cause.
