With this "Comment on Every Vote" side challenge going on, I've decided that on every challenge that is not part of that, I will comment on my top 3 images and bottom 3 images, as well as give the score.

I think in doing this, I will be able to bypass the "meh" photos, where I don't really have anything to say.
While focusing on what I DO like and DON'T like.

Hopefully people will not be offended by the lower scores I give, but maybe explaining why I gave that score will help them.

Also, while there are some images that are my favorites of the challenge, that end up being ribbon winners; there are also times that my top images fall in the middle of the pack. For example, the Pink challenge, my top three picks actually ended up being 7th place, 14th place, and 30th place.
It happens more often than not.

So, if anyone is interested, we could do another comment side challenge. If not, I'll do it on my own.
This also doesn't commit me to explaining EVERY vote I give... because I always vote 100% in challenges (with the exception of now being in TPL2, I don't vote on my teammates photos, but I do comment).

Nobody's up for it?
It's 6 comments per challenge.

Any takers?

i'll commit to this for challenges that i vote on.

Awesome.

I learned a lot from the comment on every vote challenge... but I think that it's very time consuming.

I also thought it was interesting, looking at my favorite/least favorite images, and seeing where they fell in the challenge.

Many time, my favorite image finishes middle of the pack, and I'd like those people to know that their image stood out to me, even if it didn't to others.

I think it'll be fun. :)

I love the idea, Danielle. I usually comment a LOT more than you're suggesting, so I'm covered, comment-wise. On a related note, I was dismayed to see the extreme lack of commenting on the recently completed textures challenge. The winner had only 3 comments before rollover, and none of the top 10 had many more than that.

Probably a consequence of the commenting challenge underway with Classic Books.

Garry, I'd agree with that.

And I will try to comment on more than 6. But I think it'd be interesting to see how many people actually choose the ribboners before rollover.
Not to mention, it gives us, as photographers, a chance I see what we like an don't like about photos, and the original photographer a look into why we do/don't like the photo.

And it doesn't require you to comment on every picture... Because let's face it, sometimes a photo is just a photo and doesn't stand out. While there may be nothing visually wrong with it, it's just meh. You know?

I have already started doing it. I did on the textures challenge as well. None of my favorites were in the top ten (if I remember correctly).

Honestly, I find it easier to comment on the "best" and "worst" images. Its the scores in the middle that are hardest to comment on.

That was my whole reason for this comment challenge.
And what's even more interesting, is that what I may consider "the best images" may be "middle of the pack" for you or others... And vice versa.

I didn't specify favorite or least favorite, but somehow you knew what I meant.... hahahaha

Ah! That's ME! Meh is my name. I quite excel at "meh"....

When I comment, which is fairly frequently, I always comment on my top choices, which don't often correlate to the ribbon winners. I don't always comment on my least favorite choices, though. Mostly because my comments tend to be reactionary more than "helpful" in a technical sense.

This idea seems to be working in my favor already, ha

Which is exactly why I think people should try to comment on those photos especially.

It's easy to say why an "obviously" good or bad photo is that way, but much harder (and therefore more educational) to figure out how to express what makes a photo "meh" instead of crossing the line to be "good" ...

Remember that the ultimate purpose of the site is to help ourselves to become better photographers, not to see who can write the best critique, which is best accomplished through "challenges" ...

In the "other" commenting thread I suggested as an exercise to comment on every fifth (or third, or tenth or whatever) entry, so that you are forced to comment on an arbitrary selection of pictures, rather than picking ones you like (or don't), but without committing to commenting on every photo as in the current SC.
