Well.. all I know is that I've commented on 52 images in the backlighting challenge, and I've only gone through 187 images so far, and will be trying to finish off commenting and voting on Saturday and Sunday.. and I expect to put out at least 50 more comments..

..and I don't think any of my comments were below 2 lines (although I may be mistaken, if I am, I apologize for leaving a short comment).

I just know that I can't *expect* better comments on my own images if I don't start producing them myself..

Evidently some voters feel that a shadow has to be cast for the subject to be backlit. There are other ways to tell if a subject is backlit and other effects you can create using backlighting, other than casting shadows.

No?

I saw one image where I left a comment about there being no shadows (I wonder if you're talking about my comment). The thing is, it was a beautiful image, and appeared to be taken on a cloudy day (hence no shadows, and part of the reason why the image was so perfect). But... there were no "backlit highlights" either.

I don't need to see a shadow to know something is lit from behind. But I do need to see some kind of "from behind highlight" to know that it was lit from behind. The purpose of the challenge was to (quoting from the instructions) "use of backlighting to enhance the photo is key".

So while I voted fairly high on the photo in question (it was a great image!), I docked it one or two points (I don't remember which) for not appearing to me to "meet the challenge".

What is the general opinion of posting outtakes for a challenge in progress?

I really thought my backlighting entry would do well, but it is sad right now.

I am dying to know how some other shots would have faired, but I don't know how big a deal it is if they are similar to your entry. Opinions? Post or Dont Post?

I can't work some voters out. I just had a look at my wife's entry in the "backlighting" challenge and it has gone from a 6.6 to a 5.7 in one day. There have been a comments left that say it is a 10 and deserves a ribbon. (there are 2 comments saying that the focus is a bit soft, even though it was suppose to be soft). It's hard to improve if you don't know what to improve ;-(
Please guy's if you are going to vote a photo down leave an explaination......

I am in the same boat. I took a risk with an abstract but 7 commenters think it's great and one said it's OOF but I can't see it. It's at 4.75 now. Not complaining just confused.

I dropped .5 since last night, with only 10 new votes and no new comments. If your gonna give a low vote, at least have the courtesy to comment on why you think the photo sucks!

Or, if you don't want to comment, at least give me a higher score!

I want very badly to comment on the photos I rate 5 and below, but I hesitate for 2 reaons. First, I am so new to photography myself -- the receipients will look at my profile and either blast me for my comment or dismiss it, so why waste the time. When I know more about what I'm doing I will comment more. I know how helpful it was to me on the framing challenge that Zoomdak and mocabela took the time to give concrete suggestions for improvement. Secondly, I am finding it difficult to say something like "you've met the challenge and everything here is technically good but it's just an average photograph -- it doesn't have the WOW factor that those I scored higher have." Altho, that's exactly why I think all of my entries have placed solidly in the 5 range -- except for the one where I misread the challenge. There are lots of photos in this challenge I would rate higher than my own -- I know a great photograph when I see it. I get few negative comments or suggestions because I guess others are struggling with the same problem I mentioned above.

I am also wondering about the fewer than 5 shots per challenge that can't really be serious, can they? I mean they show no effort, no creativity and no post processing. I can't figure out why they were entered unless they are trying to compete for the lowest score. And please don't misunderstand me -- 99% of the shots show serious effort and I seriously consider them. Surely, I'm not the only one thinking this? I figure they're not serious entries and don't comment on them.

I think that if you post an out take that is similar to the post you are going to make, then it will be easily recognized as your shot. That would pretty much destroy annonimity.

I think out takes should be saved for after the challenge.

And so you don't have to go look, I'm brand new to the site and have not entered any challenges - yet.

Does light directly from the side count as back light? I didn't think it did. I don't mean behind and to the side - that I would say yes. I mean dead on left or right.

Help.

Thanks

Interesting that one commenter on my picture commented that it was side light and not back light. Thing is that the sun was directly behind the subject and you can tell this by the shadows... hmmm. Never mind. The comments are good so far and I am pleased. Some nice images in this challenge too. Ann

Just got finished voting Backlighting. I was surprised at how many really good shots were in this one. Too many leaves and sunflowers. I hope the voters can see past the "formulaic" ones and award the ribbons to some of the more creative ones.

As someone who entered a shot that is among the leaves and sunflowers, I hope the voters can vote the merits of the photo, "formulaic" or not. So far, I'm doing pretty well so I have no complaints. I reckon that some of the leaves and sunflowers are better than others, and some are better than other kinds of pictures, and some are not. The challenge is backlighting -- not backlighting and no leaves or sunflowers!

You probably just voted mine low, since it dropped by .03 in 2 votes! Argh!!

Is there a last minute mad dash to make photos down during the last couple of hours of a challenge?

I just dropped .11 points without any new votes!

haha, whatever!

(edit, dropped .11 not .15)
