I didn't enter this one and have just started voting. After looking through the thumbs iam a little dissappointed. As usual some really good images but many ordinary ones I probably got spoilt by the outakes posted beforehand I saw some fantastic images in them.
Not really complaining just a little dissapointed.

One of the reasons we ask that people not post "out-takes" until the challenge is complete!

it's interesting...I took a risk with my picture in backlighting, assuming that people would read the instructions. it seems that my picture is being marked low (probably because people can't see what it has to do with backlighting.) But I think a lot of people are ignoring the part in the rules that says, "or lighting areas behind the object you want to highlight." too bad...cuz my photo rox! hehe jk

Technique Challenge: Backlighting is the idea of shining light at an object from behind, or lighting areas behind the object you want to highlight. You can photograph anything you want, but the use of backlighting to enhance the photo is key. Here's the catch: the subject must not become a silhouette because of the backlighting.

I'm getting voted a little low because of a difference of opinion on the challenge description myself.

I'm ok with it for the most part, but it's a little dis-heartening.

I feel you. I keep going back and thinking if I have really bad taste, or if most of DPC has really bad taste. And since obviously my tastes are good, it's the DPCer's taste in photography that sucks, for the most part. :)

Well, don't feel for me too much, because things have turned around a little for now..

I'm going to bed now, so it's going to be a very interesting click on the "update" button when I wake up tomorrow morning.. but over the last 20 or so votes, I've climbed pretty steadily...

Here's to hoping I can either hang on.. or increase even more. *biting fingernails*.

Here's to morning.. heh.

LOL I have 3 comments and 2 of them say I do not meet the challenge even though my object practically has a halo around it. *sigh*

The light doesn't have to be in the photo to have been behind an object people...Just a thought.

And double check your monitors before deciding that the object in question is a sillouette. :) I've only seen 1 that qualifies that way after recalibrating my monitor.

If you see detail- it ain't a sillouette. ;) Just a thought.

Clara-me getting comments like that? Whatever makes you think that?

I am totaly disapointed with my backlighting entry..
I can barely hold on to a 6 where my Travel guide picture is doing 6.6 and is far worse....

I don't get it....

people are saying my photo is a silouette and its not. I think people just need to adjust their monitors properly.

I just might have my lowest ever...back light isn't obvious (to anyone but me) and I'm getting "doesn't meet the challenge" comments. Oh well. :(
I wish someone would request a dq. hint, hint!

I know the feeling... I entered a shot that, by far, is my most successful attempt at a backlit studio-style shot, but I'm getting torn apart in the scoring... hovering around 4.9, with only two comments... but both comments are positive!

Look, folks, if you're going to give low scores on a technically good shot that meets the challenge, leave a comment!

Something tells me that with nearly 400 entries, the days of getting useful comments, critiques, and thoughtful voting on open challenges is gone.

Funny how it's all relative isn't it? You're totally disappointed with barely holding on to a 6.. a 6! most people dream of that my man..

Whereas I'm absolutely and utterly ecstatic about holding on to a 5.78. :)

Well it's like this...
My highest scoring picture ever was a 5.9, with my 100Km drive 5 minute walk point and shoot (can't mis) Travel Guide photo scoring 6.6 (sometimes 6.7) I got the feeling I could REALY make pictures.
So I decided to enter backlighting, put a bit more energy in it then usual (about 6 Euro and half an hour work) and was so pleased with the result.
Showed it to everybody and it's in my eyes far better then the Travel picture, but it's scoring lower, so that's why I am disapointed.

I am happy with my 2 6+ pictures in 2 competitions, but I guess I won't be a ribbon winner for a long time....

It's all hit and miss man, even the best photographers on this site miss once in awhile, so don't let it get you down :) You never know.. mirrors, smoke, or team sport action could net you a 7.5 ;)

I also looked at all those fantastic images and thought mine won't score and wasn't sure if I should submit or not, but I finally did. I think you should not be influenced by the outtakes posted before challenge. Just do your best and submit. there has been debates if posting outtakes before the voting starts should be banned, but I don't think thats going to happen.
I really liked your hope entry and I am looking forward to more amazing shots from you.

There are some really amazing shots but far to many seemed to miss the point of the challenge IMO !
09/10/2004 03:10:55 AM · #45
the challenge does NOT say the part of the picture cannot be a silhouette it just says the subject cannot be a silhouette. People are not seeing the title, subject or what the picture is about and should really start looking at the picture for more then a couple of seconds before judging it. If you look more for creativeness etc. you would see more art then just a metter of taking a simple shot. people I find are judging it against their own shots and THEY might not have even met the challenge. I wish people would take more time on voting before they grade/vote it.

I think I may have dropped the biggest turd on this enrty. Well, I went to change it at 2 mitures before deadline and missed. This is great, cause I need the feeling of a low score to super sharpen my senses. For what is worth I appreciate all the ones. I may break the record. Good luck to all those that are ahead.

I agree, I just finished voting and I ran across some really awesome photos. Then there were a few where the shadows actually fell backward (behind the subject) and I'm scratching my head wondering... was this the backlighting challenge or the front lighting challenge?

If you feel that the photographer "missed the point" you should leave a comment instead of just marking it down. IMO

I agree. My framing received 34 3's, 12 2's, and 3 1's and I only got 5 comments, which were favorable (except one that asked about the title). No one left any comments on why they scored so low. Not that I think I entered a 10 but I was hoping to break into the sixes or even the high fives, but I ended with a 4.7 and no one to tell me what I did wrong or if they thought I didn't meet the challenge. I may not agree with your comment or vote, but so what? If I don't know what why my picture wasn't liked (at least enough for an average score), how can I improve the quality of pictures I submit?

I have also noticed some shots which do not fall into the silhoutte category. There is enough discernable information...yet I notice that many monitors are not properly calibrated and these voters are at a loss. I mean, all they see is a silhoette. I recall the comments on one thread of a bottle shot with side lighting which picked up a lot negative comments, when in reality the image was on the money. But hey, these are minor problems that all sights have.
