I'm sure there are lots of you out there, like me, who have an idea for a photo project/theme/story/essay and keep putting it off for some reason or another. Or maybe you started one, and just kind of let it drift for a while. How about we pick those projects up and get them going for October and November?

For me I have been wanting to photograph all the gold exchanges, pawn shops, titles loan and other questionable loans joints in my area for quite a while now...there are a ton of them here, and I think it's odd. I know it might sound like a weird thing to fixate on, but none the less, I want to do it for journalistic purposes.

Your project will probably be more visually appealing, but lets get these projects, what ever they may be going.

Anyone game?

Sounds similar to the lamentably-departed SoFoBoMo (Solo Photgraphy Book in one Month) project. I think there was a thread a year or so ago from people who had participated in that project and wanted to continue it despite the demise of the official organization. You might try and find that thread and contact the participants.

My problem would be to try and decide which suspended project to revive ... :-)

I just dug up quite a few old ones I never got around to doing anything with. I'm game.

Sounds interesting to me. I'll just have to decide which particular unfinished project (or which intended-but-not-even-started-yet project) to do. Then again I might not finish it .. hubby has vacation time in November.

SoFoBoMo...yes! Kinda like that. I'll search for the thread and see what I can dig up. And are you joining the sc Paul? I'll go ahead and add your name...you have nearly 2 months to decide on which project to finish up. : D

I'm not clear on the concept. If we sign up, what are we supposed to do. Sorry if I sound dense... That's 'cause I AM!

Finish a project/essay/story/idea and have a cohesive body of work by the end of November. What that project is is up to the photographer. It could be a nice collection of pineapple, north facing windows, steaks on a grill photographs...it's up to the image maker. Sometimes we have so many ideas it's hard to pick which one to start with, much less complete. It's nice to have a group of people to go through the process with, or at least that was the idea. And to see the finished set of images at the end of November would be really nice.

Bumping...

And no, this is not really meant to be like group therapy. Just a group of people working towards a similar goal without the drama of a group therapy session...like Paul mentioned, peer pressure would be a better description.

This is about picking up, or even starting a photo project/essay and getting it done by the end of November. I thought people were looking for more side challenges? Was I wrong? Any subject matter will do.

Would anyone else like to join?

Ok I'll commit before I'm committed.

sounds good. I have 2 very modest projects in mind.

ha. at first I thought you meant all that stuff around the house and garden that never gets finished, and that we could just photograph it/them and voila!

Ha! Like all my half finished needlework projects...poor little half done things lamenting in the backroom closet. At least they have company.

Okay, looks like there will be 6 of us. I'll get some shots done this weekend. I have to photograph these places while they are closed. In one little strip mall I counted 6 different title/quick loan/paycheck advance places alone. Yesterday I drove by two new ones that have just opened.

Kinda like this ... ?

I'll try and do something for this, but I have a couple of actual (book) projects I'm supposed to be working on ...

I have one that's not so much put off, but started and going to take me a long time.

I decided to collect (and eventually make a book of) people with interesting beards, or in some cases, interesting people with beards :) It has already helped me get up more nerve to take photos of strangers, "with permission". My current strategy, is shoot candid if I can, then approach and ask for a portrait style pic.

Unfortunately, when I'm out and about sometimes I don't have the best camera with me, and I feel a bit odd telling them I'm making a book of photos of people with beards and then shooting with my little RX100. That I'm still working on. :)

Anyway, count me in, I'd love some feedback on some of these shots, as many as I can muster. I won't be finished by Nov--I think this will take me several years. But all encouragement and critical feedback appreciated.

I moved to L.A. from 2010 through 2012, and quite often had my camera with me, but for a variety of reasons was really struggling with my photography. I've pulled out quite a few shots from that era that I think can be pretty good, but gets set aside for stuff I'm doing now. That's what I'll be working on (ironically when I get back home from L.A. at the end of the week).

One of my projects is very similar to Rachel's, also requiring an untimely early rising. We will see.

(Yes, GeneralE either photoshop or just plain artsy messy).

(Neil, try intimidatingimpressing them with a Coolpix L10).

Cool...we can start posting stuff up anytime, to this very thread. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's work. I'll probably post my first images next Monday, unless I happen to get some evening shots during the week. Some of the places will look better in the morning light, some better in the evening light. I'll have to experiment and see...none of these places are beautiful, so I want to make sure the light is, if at all possible.

Are we supposed to post work in progress or only the final (hopefully) completed compilation?

It would be nice to see how a project progresses, but people don't have to share the bits and pieces if they don't an to. I'll probably be posting once a week or so, but checking the thread out more often just to see what's going on.

Guess I'll kick this one off....Two from my California stockpile.

Now that I'm done with the commenting challenge, back to this one.....

10/20/2013 06:19:40 PM · #25
Had my first rejection...on the bike path, a cool looking dude with a cool white goatee style beard, and a cool beatnic style beanie. I only had the RX100 but I figured I'd try..."I'm making a book of beards, would you mind if I took your photograph?".... "yes"...."yes, you would mind?"..."yes".

Boo.
