I'm on the fence. I had a newbie (a young person with only a handful of entries) whose just started photography and joined DPC. This young lady just PM'd me to say thank you for being her first commenter that didn't rip her a new asshole. The ugliness in her comments was enough she admitted to being in tears.

Now, I know DPC and the folks therein and can take it. But for someone who has just joined, we seem like a bunch of rude, mean asshats. Based on comment I have received and heard from friends, this challenge has seemingly given folks carte-blanch to say whatever and however they want and be immune because of the "social experiment".

Of course I will get flamed heavily for this post, for going against the grain. I understand and accept this. But I believe the amount of vitriol and just plain cruelty I've seen and read in my/others comments has crossed a line.

That's absolutely correct. People need to be more sensitive while commenting. And that's so because the receiver can't decipher the tone. If the receiver doesn't get offended on a rude/unpolished comment, then it's the merit of the receiver, not the commenter.

Agreed. It has. I don't think the idea of this "side-challenge" was to say whatever you want no matter how rude. I'm pretty sure the idea was to challenge us, as voters, to give credence to our votes... maybe help us think a little more, maybe give a suggestion or two that might be helpful to the photographer.

Perhaps it's time to re-visit the suggestion that photographers be able to flag their entries with an indication of what kind of comments they want, somewhat along this line (author editing preferences at a poetry site):

Maybe, but that's not really the point here. Rude, disrespectful comments should not be tolerated, no matter which box is checked.

What, exactly, counts as rude in your mind?

I want to know because I can't decide if ya'll are getting really horrible rude comments, or if this is just sensitivity run amok...

I find really strong opinionated comments slightly irritating, yours was like that Cory :-) it wasn't rude though.

Not that I mind, but would you really prefer that every commenter obfuscates their opinion? I can't see the use in having to suss out what they were really trying to say, and furthermore, doing so allows people to self-deceive much more readily.

Honestly, can you explain to me why you would prefer a comment that hides it's true intentions?

It's not the intentions but the strength of the ego that delivers them that is irritating, I do thank you for the comment though.

Well put. I'll leave it at that.

That's got to be a quote from a good classic novel.... if it's not, it should be:)

I really do have to laugh a bit at the whole thing. Sorry guys, but I find your softness equally irritating.

I'm obliged to be soft, last time I wasn't you complained to site council and I got a warning, that was pretty irritating and downright childish but I do love you so, you know that right ?

And (to echo Jagar), some of us who love you find your strident, tough-guy veneer irritating. So what? If I surrounded myself with people who think just like I do, I'd be a damned lonely m,an :-)

Is this whole comment thing for votes given under six, bc not one person who commented gave me a higher score, I'm not following this whole commenting thing, can someone explain, I don't want to read the whole thread!

Yeah yeah call me lazy,

Simply put in a comment for every photo you vote on. Include your vote and why you gave it that vote. Should be an interesting exercise for both commentor and photographer. And it might ruffle some feathers. I think it would have most effect if we all did it on the same challenge, but I'm open to other suggestions.

Here's the OP for reference, Anita.

Anita, at least go read the first post. That pretty much explains what's going on.

Hmm. You might remind me, since I've slipped on the details, but whatever it was, I'm certain you did break some rule or another, or else SC wouldn't have bothered....

That's a funny thing about me, I love rules... I love to play on the edge of rules, to find the lines, but I also know, and respect, that there is a price to be paid for breaking the rules. Sorry if you found it childish - I'm sure I thought I had good reason at the time. And I hope that you too know that I love you back... It's all a part of being in the DPC family, we won't always agree, and might disagree vehemently sometimes, but that doesn't diminish the real and honest adoration I have for the entire group here.

I'll get to you, eventually. : D

I'm just spreading it out. It's been a fairly time consuming exercise to say the least. And some of the reactions in this thread haven't helped.
