We at least *attempt* to keep a balance between technical, conceptual, and subject-oriented challenges. Technical challenges tend to be repetitive by nature, as do subject-oriented to a lesser degree. It's been over 2 years since we had a Rule-of-Thirds challenge... These "very original" challenge topics Art mentions, whilst interesting in their own right, often tend to be a little esoteric and attract fewer participants. We don't want to become the "Oddball Challenge" site, at least not any more than we already have :-)

Thank you Robert. You guys at SC do a fabulous job and it is much appreciated! These guys would moan even if they won the lottery ;)

Actually, I was more bitching than moaning.

I accept your challenge!

All fair points and reasoned responses (except P-A-U-L's) ;-)

I'm over it.

Would like to see all new challenge topics vetted in a public thread, the way member suggestions are.

Even the ones that are repeats of standard technical challenges?

It's not as much of a challenge if people know what the topic will be a week ahead of posting, and could give those who frequent the forums a significant head-start. I've always thought that any topics suggested in a thread not be posted until the thread has been off the front page for at least a couple of weeks.

I'm thinking that the topics could be vetted in the forum before they are added to the official suggestion pool or some sort of topic queue and then they could be randomly picked with an override capability for timely or current events that might supersede.

That's mostly exactly how it happens. Almost every challenge we post, certainly at least 85-90% of them, are from the queue, which originated ion the forums, or from the archived old challenges, which originally were part of the queue, which originated in the forums... Exceptions mostly are "timely challenges" of one sort or another, and many of THOSE originate in the forums also, like the Tom Petty as a recent example. Those aren't usually "queued" because they are targeted to a specific time frame. Occasionally we post a challenge that came out of SC brains and got queued without being forumized, but there aren't a lot of those.

I believe DPC is more user-driven on challenge topics than any other site I've seen, frankly. I could be wrong.

I disagree. There seems to be a significant increase in "SC brain" challenges in the past couple years. It can feel like someone is stuffing the ballot box. Some of these challenges might benefit from vetting for language, intent, popularity. Why not let them see light of day like other suggestions.

Btw, thanks Art for your restrained and rational input.

I'm not sure there's EVER been a time when every single challenge, without exception, was discussed in forums and vetted before being placed in the queue, but I've only been SC for a couple years so I'm not the one to know. For what it's worth, I looked at the most recent 60 challenges right now and as far as I can tell only maybe 4 of them are not either repeats of previous challenges or challenges that were proposed in the forums and selected from the queue. Bear in mind that the queue has literally hundreds of challenges that have been proposed over the years and, for one reason or another, have never been used.

Let's be more specific here; you seem very insistent about this. Exactly what would you propose as the "proper" mechanism, or a viable one, for generating and posting challenge topics?

All I was suggesting was that SC, who are also DPC members who can enter challenges, might submit their new ideas for challenge suggestions in the Challenge Suggestion forum, like other members do. That is all. Much hooplah unwarranted.
10/21/2017 09:04:32 PM · #470
ah. I like that. I think we should have a "Unwarranted Hooplah" challenge.

Answer in 25 words or less and submit one Cracker Jack boxtop to validate submission.
(This is meant to be humorous and post will be understood only by old people)

Are you sure you didn't misread that at "Unwatered Hookah"?

Oh, I understood this. That confirms what I've been suspecting.
