I will be going to New Orleans in November and I was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for what to see and photograph.

We will be staying in the French Quarter and will not have a rental car so most of what we do will be walking or taking some form of public transportation.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

A streetcar named "Desire" ...?

Actually, the street car can have any name but Desire would be just fine!

Drop a PM to crik. She's a native, lifelong resident and a very nice lady.

I lived there myself during my teen years, and have been back several times. The French Quarter is a must see -- a walk up and down Bourbon Street will keep you and your camera busy for hours. Might not all be exactly G rated though.

Actually I was there in July and got lucky. It was a Sunday, and we happened along a wedding party doing the traditional second line wedding march through the streets -- brass band and all. (I haven't developed the photos yet.)

A few blocks toward the river is Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral. Lots of history, beautiful grounds, and a center for artists as well. (Be sure to stop in to Cafe du Monde for coffee and beignets.) Jax Brewery is there too.

As mentioned, the streetcars run up and down Canal Street, and it would be quite easy to capture an image like the iconic Robert Frank one. I think they're still running the same cars. They're ancient.

So much more. I'll post as I think of things...

Where are you staying....I would suggest the Omni Royal....It is right next to Jackson square.

I would suggest going to the St Louis Cathedral...everybody has to go to Cafe DuMont and eat some beniets (a variation of the donut..very good). The french Market is always interesting too. All of these are located in the french quarter and in close proxemity.

For night life there is no place like Bourbon street. Oh also Pat O'briens is a pub on bourbon. I love N'awlins.
The city graveyards are interesting too.

I used to go atleast once a month.

How long are you going to be there...

New Orleans is great. When we were there I ate my way around town. Yes, the begniets at Cafe Du Monde are a must. One thing to keep in mind is that the town is largely closed (at least the attractions, museums and such) on Mondays.

There's a park in front of St Louis Cathedral that's great for pics and I enjoyed trying to capture the architecture on the narrow streets. Hard to get pictures in narrow spaces and the businesses and homes are so interesting you keep trying until your head wants to explode. ;)

I also spent some time up on the walkway next to the Mississippi getting some river shots. A good way to walk off the food too.

I'd like to see some of the new infrastructure intended to prevent future flooding ... I like to photograph technical/structural/mechanical stuff ...

The streetcars will also take you through the Garden District all the way down to the Zoo. It will go past Tulane University also. The French Market is also good for a few minutes. Fresh fruit, vegies, vendors, junk, people.

Adam, thanks for the info. We will be staying at the Prince Conti Hotel which I was told is in the French Quarter. We will be there from November 5th thru 11th.

All that was mentioned above are great ideas. I would recommend taking the St. Charles streetcar to the end of the line and back. The architecture and the old homes in this area have been kept up very nicely and are a beautiful site to see. Many great restaurants along this route as well.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I will try to get to as many of them as I can.

Does anyone know anything about Frenchmen Street?

I heard it was off the beaten path but well worth seeing.

I'm seeing this thread for the first time tonight. Looks like you've gotten a lot of good suggestions already.
The World WarII museum is also a popular spot and is near the Quarter. If you like casino's Harrah's is a short streetcar ride away.
Frenchman street is known for its music spots. It's located near the quarter in the Marigny.
I'll be happy to help with any questions you might have about the city sights and sounds so drop me a PM anytime.

Frenchman is great. Very low key and more local.

Did you make your trip already? Would love to hear how it went/what you where able to see.
