One of my many favorite 'common' photos is "Migrant Mother" by Dorthea Lange.

My current one in "Backlighting" :)

heheh.. just kidding.

That's a tough question, and I don't think I can honestly answer it.

I *WILL* say that the most powerful photo I've ever seen was the one of the firefighter carrying that little girl out of the Oklahoma Federal Building after being bombed. Nothing tops that for pure, fierce, raw emotion.

Here's a hyperlink, for the curious, but I'm not going to post it, since it's a really sensitive photograph.

Firefighter picture.

wow i've never seen that before very powerful.

Speaking of graphic , one that sticks in my mind was the {headshot} from Vietnam

This Vietnam war image is pretty powerful as well... but it is quite graphic and not for the faint of heart. Maybe not the best photo ever technically speaking, but from a PJ standpoint, it ranks way up there.

Great photo, the work of Dorothea Lange correct? I remember seeing that photo while reading some of the work by Paul Taylor last year.

Now that's emotional Laurie , unfortunately a very famous image in it's time .
09/05/2004 03:24:52 AM · #15
So far, the images posted have all shown powerful emotions. Raw emotion, that's what stands out to us. Pain, agony, sorrow. And I agree that these are some of the greates photographs. But still an interesting look of human nature.

I think another one would be Sharbat Gula, Pakistan, 1984 by Steve Mccurry.

That's surely a very difficult thing to find, best photo ever... everyone's opinion would differ. Maybe (slightly) easier if it was broken down into categories. Best Soccer Photo Ever, Best Baseball Photo Ever, Best Portrait Ever, Best Candid Photo Ever, Best Photo of an Ice Cream Salesman Ever, Best Hamster Photo Ever. and so on ad infinitum. (Add smiley here, if you please.)

Gotta go with Laurie's choice. That's the one that came into my mind as soon as I saw the title of this thread. I doubt any other photo will ever match it's impact. It is an understatement to say that it changed the course of history.

Perhaps work by Robert Capa.

Steve McCurry's Afghan girl.

Is it just me? Or are we confusing "powerful / disturbing image" with the topic of "best photo ever" ???

I saw the topic and came running to see what people were talking about / looking at. And while these vietnam and firefighter pictures are full of emotion, they really aren't very good "pictures" are they??? (or *is* it just me?)

Now *there* is a photo that could be classified in the "best ever" category! Thanks for sharing, I'd love to see more.
