The whole point of DPC is to get you OUT of that comfort zone. When your "style" is reliant upon a particular editing technique, then you effectively shut out any prospect for growth by trying new and different approaches... and you're left with lamenting how something else doesn't change to suit you.

that a pretty sweeping generalization, i try new techniques and styles all the time, i regularly get out of my comfort zone, i just never submit them here because they usually break an editing rule or dont turn out so well. I have actually noticed more improvement in my photography since i stopped participating and i actually defined a style for myself. that would have never happened had i been tied to dpc.

this mindset that you have to do this or that in order to grow is shallow. everyone grows on their own.

I think the Free Study should be Basic or Minimal editing so we can see the Photographers eye. My opinion only of cause.

no one is talking about digital art, you guys need to get over your fears of digital art talking over the universe, its not going to happen.

we are talking about personal preferences here, i think most photography is boring as hell even if it looks pretty. i dont get what makes some photographs "art" and others not.

this place is getting too smug with what photography is or isn't.

Works both ways, Mike: it's shallow to suggest that rules should be different to suit your particular idea of growth. There is value to being challenged to work within specific parameters rather than finding your own way. That's how schools function. It's the difference between teaching each other to become better photographers (the stated intent of DPC) and individual exploration. You may find other avenues that interest you beyond the constraints of DPC rules, and that's fine, but it's not a prerequisite for growth or creativity here.

Oh, and and on score front I've dropped below 7. Send sympathy or scorn as appropriate.

Your loss is my gain, I guess -- up a bit to 6.5.

Feel free to keep sending the points my way. :)

Apparently so. Still dropping, so my entry is misunderstood, the voters aren't looking hard enough, there's trolls, something about editing limitations, or 800 px is too small. It's gotta be one of those.

Shhhh! Nobody ever considers that possibility. It's definitely the troll/editing limit/lightning voter/misunderstood/file size thing.

Well I clearly don't have a clue what DPC likes any more. The photo I expected to fail hopelessly is still going UP:

so, Mike... can you tell us which other site you are competing at so we can come over, too? ;-) naw, i'm just teasing ya.

at least for me, my scoring here goes in cycles. i was really sucking wind a while back, but seemed to be hitting it spot on recently, and now indications of another downturn. i let "what will score well" play some part of what i shoot and how i process, but definitely not everything. and shots i predict are going to be "meh" often really surprise me and score high, and vice-versa.

i really think you have a good portrait style, which i am terrible at, so you will likely always do better than me in people shots.

you need to do what you need to do, but i have found DPC to challenge me over the past few years, and has definitely improved my photo AND processing skills.

and all that being said, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

i am at a terrible 4.9 on my FS

My excuse is that I'm an artist misunderstood in my own time. But just you wait, after I'm dead and gone, I'll be FAMOUS!! Then we'll see who's laughing. It won't be me, of course.

I'm at 6.7. I hope my score passes you and Shannon on your way down while I'm on the way up! I'll be sure to wave. ;-)

I'll wave back, but won't promise to use all fingers.

I will say that the one great point Mike made was that DPC does tend to steer one away from having a 'style'

I've recently come to the conclusion that I do need to start working on a series or two, and some recurring styles.

DPC demands a very flexible shooter, but the market demands a consistent style (generally speaking anyway)....

There is a bit of tension there, but essentially, DPC's restrictions are exactly what makes it special IMO.

Oh, and the blind idiot lighting voters don't get my photo because it's too small and they're all trolls.
