in a dark arena, where you are pushing your ISO into areas where noise becomes and issue, you want RAW. It is much easier to be reduce noise and pull shadow detail from a RAW than a jpg.

getting the best exposure possible usually takes precedent over burst rate in the OPs case.

I agree with Mike! with having RAW would give you more capability to do some post processing later when you get back home. Also about having fast FPS you could do that in RAW mode with minimum having below two:

1. First make sure your on camera noise reduction is off because this is going to take some of your camera time
2. have a high speed SD/CF card like 95MB/s

i didn't think these would increase the actual FPS, its a hard setting isn't it? meaning you get a specific burst rate in jpg and another in RAW, modifying settings wont affect those values.

what it will do is increase the amount of images that could be fired in succession to the max, since it can process the files faster and write them to the card faster.

i could be wrong...

there's definitely a threshold for shooting, but if your camera is faster than the write speed on your card, you'll bottleneck.

Gaby, if you get the chance to do another shoot and really think that you need some other equipment, give me a shout and you can borrow some of my gear.
I haven't shot ballet before but have shot a Grease performance by the Barnyard company. Using my 5D3 and 70-200 2.8 I was hitting 6400 ISO often in order to keep the shutter speed fast enough.
Spot metering as suggested earlier is a good idea and I found it helped a lot.

Awhhh thanks Steve. I would be most uncomfortable borrowing friend's equipment ... you never know what could happen. But thank you for the offer.

I forgot that you had done stage stuff ...

I do spot metering most of the time anyway, so one box I can tick off :-).

No it won't increase the FPS but it would help in quick writing to the card before system is available for next burst when you have on camera noise reduction on system would try to reduce the noise when it is done clicking and won't be ready for next burst! that is what I was saying :)

It's all insured :-)
And I am serious. You are welcome to borrow something should you need it

I did an indoor live performance coverage couple of weeks back and some of the photographs are here

I followed as most of the other folks said, I used 6D with ISO over 6400 to cover some fast movement.

Checkout those photographs.

Looks like an awesome performance and nice shots.
