Yes, but we make molehills out of mountains. ;)

Yes, you and the mining engineers.

A couple of years ago, I heard a radio program about summer camps for kids/teens, and they mentioned an "Explosives Camp" for kids who might be interested in mining -- sounded quite exciting!

Cool --my son's a big fan ... Adam was on radio for a lengthy interview a few days ago -- interesting and funny guy beyond the blowing stuff up part.

Nah, "do as I say, not as I do" is more applicable ... besides, what I said was factually correct AFAIK, and (in this pecular case) the rules mayn't apply since the potentially-aggrieved person was not a member of the site at the time the possible offending remark was made.

He left. Some people simply stop logging in while others require a dramatic exit and go on a rule-breaking spree until their accounts are terminated.

And some leave quietly and then get notified they've been banned after they left.

I, too, am on a rule-breaking spree. Just ripped the tags off my mattress and pillow and am about to walk into 7-11 with no shoes on cuz that's how I roll. ...of course I've never beat up a spambot, so...

ooooh... tags off the pillow I can see -- but the mattress?? That's a federal offense... (I think there may be a reward if we turn him in...)

Ken. Just don't end up as a hitchhiker in a Pee Wee Herman movie.

It's better to burn out than to fade away, said many.

Either way, you "won" and proved your point.

Funny, I didn't even know I was in a duel.

I don't think I was the one who escalated things out of proportion. If Slippy thought my post was out of line, he should have hit the Report Post button and turned me in like he would any other jerk who posts something inappropriate ... oh, wait, I forgot, Mr. self-appointed vigilante doesn't use those buttons, preferring to take executive action on his own ... and then, when the other site moderators told him the duel was off (actually I don't know what they told him) he has a fit and takes his attitude and goes home.

Besides, he's the geologist -- I've only had one college course in it and they didn't even cover the construction of molehills, much less mountains. Of course, his specialty is in the deconstructive activities of the Earth's crust ... :-(

You think it was just that post? that thread?

Of course not -- that's my point. Even after serving out a suspension for excess obstreperousness he continued to refuse repeated request to "tone it down" a bit.

My "job" here is to try and get people to follow site rules and policies, not to get on my knees and beg Mr. Strikeslip Fault to please pretty please with sugar on it follow the rules ... if he can't take a few barbs I'm not sure how he could justify his own assault of every forum thread he can find.

I didn't "do" a d****d thing to Mr. Slippy -- he chose to have a hissy fit (sorry, ladies) and go home. As far as I'm concerned, that's the ultimate proof that he was deliberately choosing to act outside of site guidelines, and that I was right to call him on it and to ask him (nicely at first, honest!) to desist.

As for the "spambot" issue -- I didn't even check the account he was quoting -- posting language challenging someone to a fight in the forums was enough for me, and that he was bumping a spam post instead of reporting it just provides grounds for issuing a separate citation. Again, I didn't "do" anything except ask him to stop doing stuff like that. I could have edited or hidden his post, however I believe in free speech, but also in taking responsibility for what you say, and saying it within whatever "rules" may be in effect, and he was not operating within those guidelines.

I didn't ask him to go -- that was 100% his choice.

its not like he woke up this way one day, he's been the same obnoxious person since he came here, so why all the sudden was his brand of humor intolerable?

a lot of us are voice our opinions because his brand of humor was transparent, over top yes, but that's what made it funny, it was in your face and satirical.

i think maybe some discretion could be used by you and others who are tasked with policing, look at the context of the thead, and if the context is say a spambot, then you let it slide. it obvious when things escalate to a point that you guys need to step in, it doesn't happen often.

We know when things get out of hand, when a thread goes awry we all notice it and back off. None of us care to see someone get hurt, sure you get a mob mentality sometime, but the person taking the brunt usually deserved it.

the moderation doesn't need to be as heavy handed as it seems lately.

He opened up a second account and publicly announced he wanted to be banned. I don't see how that is the "same obnoxious person". He stepped over a line that is not drawn in the sand. I'll miss his humor but he had to go.

sure that was crossing the line, but he had made up him mind to leave at that point. Prior to that he had been suspended and always told to tone it back, but that all seemed pretty recent as well, my question is what set that off? why the sudden interest in pulling back the reigns on him the last few weeks and not the years before?

Mike I think Slippy felt like he was being hawked.

Kind of like if you get a ticket from the cops you pull over, get the speech, receive a ticket, then move on. But if the cop follows you around for the next few week just waiting for you to cross the line it could get annoying.
