Hey neighbor! While the letter might look like Reader's Digest junk mail, I don't believe it is a scam. That is, "if" you don't send them any money. I have 4 pictures at picture.com, and 3 of them have been chosen for publication. So far, I've received 2 letters indicating such and that they've also been advanced as semi-finalist in the contest.

Picture.com has a sister site - Poetry.com. My sister posted 6 poems there, and all of them have been selected for publication. She says she is being bombarded with junk mail to "sell" her a framed "award" certificate and other such stuff.

I'm waiting to see what comes of this. I've opted not to send money for anything, but to authorize publication in their books. I'll be able to say that I'm a published photographer, then.

I looked at your Rocky picture - that's a really beautiful shot!

It's similar to the "Who's Who of High School Students" thing. They say you've been chosen to be published, then try to sell you the book along with other things. Not a big deal as long as you don't get suckered into sending them money.

If it's anything like poetry.com, it's not a true scam and so long as you don't give them any money you won't lose anything from it, but at the same time it's a complete waste of time. You'll only be published in a giant anthology that is only purchased by people who also have things published in it and were suckered into buying a copy.
I'd put your effort elsewhere.

I also have 2 photos to be published. I actually received a letter just now in the mail. I think it's great to be recognised, however I don't think I'll buy that book, it'll probably cost me double the price since I live in Australia.

I'm not trying to put you down, but if somebody told me that photo was a "semi-finalist", I would doubt their judgement. I'm sure that is not your best work.

i got the initial POETRY.COM teaser awhile back, so off the top of my head i made up a horribly profane/offensive poem and sent it back

about month later they sent me another message, done up with a fancy HTML embedded parchment-type background, quoting the whole disturbed thing i'd sent -- saying my poem had been selected for inclusion in the 'best poetry of 2001' or some such tome --- offering me a pre-publication discount to purchase a limited number of copies

months later, i was invited to book a trip to a florida resort for the presentation of certificates to those whose submissions merited notice - and i was to be a recipient!

oh joy!

i only hope that my "poem" was read in absentia - those of my fellow "poets" who had not yet read their copies of the book would have certainly been pleased to hear something that might make Andrew Dice Clay blush

my wife's grandma got suckered into the whole finalist and get your picture published thing. See submitted this really kind of bad "snapshot" of her dog, it was blurry and not to good. She got that letter that it was picked and published and she bought the book. Now she gets things like that all the time. I sent in one of the very first pictures I ever took with and got picked for the book too. I just signed the thing so it will be in the book but I'm not going to buy it, because it just is pictures that everyone sends in.

--Spiderman, I love what you did with the poem. That's hilarious.

I too am a semi-finalist. Have been since the beginning of 2002. I'm still waiting to see who the winners are. I also was excited at first, but after the junk mail and trying to get me to buy the book, I passed it off as not a big deal.

I think it is one of those things where everyone wins and everyone gets published and gets the chance to buy the book they are in for $50... much like the various poetry publishing places.

I've had three photos selected for publication, I gave them permission to publish them but do not plan on buying the book, Although I must say that there are quite a few very nice shots there in the annual contest. I actually won a second place spot with one of my shots but to tell you the truth, I never thought it was prizewinning material.

I was a Second prizewinner for 2002 and they sent me a commemorative bronze coin. They also sent a list of the award winners (Grand Prize Winner, First Prize Winners & Second Prize Winners). I never sent them any money. I plan on ordering that book from the bookstore this spring, and have the coin mounted with the picture. I had fun with it....

I agree roger, If they want to publish it, let them. It can't hurt you as long as each picture is copyrighted to each individual. However, I'm still not shelling out that kind of money just for a book with one or two pictures in it of mine.

I won a silver first place medal from picture.com last year for 2001, and just received a notice that I won another silver first place medal for 2002... I haven't bought the books, either, but "recognized and published by the International Library of Photography" sounds good on my resume. :)

Jodie, you have some really good shots there. I really liked the "storm approaching" was that in IR. Did your titles "butter" and Rosebud" get mixed up?

SCAM ALERT!!!

I have participated in poetry.com as well.. And I won. Which made me feel great. Getting published seemed great. Untill I started doing research. Almost everybody wins. And the books DO get published, but only in enough copies to go around to the poor sods who "won" their publication, and pay a ridiculous amount of money per copy.

In fact, their printing costs are fairly low, as they have their own printing facilities. They make LOTS of money, and - while it is nice to have "published" on your CV - the books by themselves are useless.

I am sorry to say this. Really, I am. But I don`t want you to be as disappointed as I was.

I, too, have been published in picture.com. In fact, I am so good that everything I send them is accepted and, by what they tell me in their letters, just "blows them away" because of the quality of the pictures and my great talent. Still, I keep sending. It impresses some folks when I go to a web site and show them my pictures.

I dunno about you guys, but reading through these posts, it seems like you want to be published more than getting money out of it. Thats fine, but someone ELSE is getting rich instead. I dont see the point of giving your images to someone only for them to get rich off of them, I'd rather print my own book, heck, I might start asking people to print their pics myself! i'll do a bundle..since they're pretty much free :)

Regarding Poetry.com (and I'm sure any site associated with it), these links:

"I need some information about Poetry.com"

(Several of the links in this thread are broken, those which are linked to Wind magazine. To make these work, substitute "//windpub.org/" for "//wind.wind.org".)

This thread is linked through the "Blurbs of Wisdom" at the Poetry Free-For-All .

i, too, was informed that i would have a photo published in a picture.com book. i have to admit that i was very excited and love telling people that i'm a "published" photographer.

i didn't buy the book and i think that's what the whole website is about, but it boosted my ego, anyway.

i can't see where it causes any damage...the photo is still mine.

My little brother writes some pretty aggressive poetry. Most of it is good, but his spelling and grammar is horrible. He entered a poem on the poetry.com site and surprise, surprise, he was a semi-finalist. The poem has about 20 highly noticeable spelling and grammar errors in it, but hey for $50.00 it can be published. I don’t think they even take the time to read the submissions.

I also am a semi-finalist in the a picture.com contest (Wandering Spirits), I won’t be buying the book and the fact that I am a “semi-finalist” in the contest proves to me that quality is not a requirement for this site. The picture I submitted isn’t even close to book material.
