For our 10th anniversary my wife took me on a sightseeing tour of New Orleans from the air. Something I have been wanting to do for a long time now. So obviously I took my camera and shot a lot of images. I would like to get some of these images on canvas but have never done this before. My camera is only 6 MP and when I upload to DPCprints I can't even get the DPI to 150 for a 12X18 print which leads me to believe that anything larger on a canvas would not look good.

Is this true? Looking for some advice on this as I am not familiar with sizing of prints. What size canvas wraps could I get and still maintain quality? Is the 6MP's limiting me from larger prints or is there a work around?

The images are:
2310 X 1540 pixels

1932X1240 pixels

1845 X 2768 pixels

My camera is also 6MP and I have printed successfully up to 16x20 (including a moderate border). My impression is that canvas prints are a bit more forgiving than paper, and you can probably be OK at 100 DPI at the final print size. Remember that you will lose something like 1-3 inches on each side for the wrap (check with your printer for the exact amount), so enlarge the canvas with some balnk area if you don't want to sacrifice and of whatever pixels you do have.

You could also upsample your image (usually up to 115% of the original will not degrade the image significantly); it may require resharpening afterwards. You can also just let the printer enlarge it in the printing process; it seems to me that the professional printers do a very good job of this.

I would contact customer service at whatever printer you plan to use and ask them what is the minimum DPI they recommend, and if you'll get a refund if not satisfied ...

I don't think it would be a problem...but personally I'm not sure those would be best on canvas.

Some thoughts:

Canvas has a texture...that works in your favor as it would hide some of the grain or noise you would get from enlarging.

But I'm not sure how good the details of those would look. I've not printed on aluminum, but the BW ones look like they might be good candidates.

I've printed a 20x30 from several shots from a Canon G2 (I think that's only 4 mp if I recall correctly). They are hanging in my dining room, and they look great (even though back then I used a pretty cheap printing service.)

I recommend Canvas on Demand. You can upload it to their site and I believe there's a way you could ask for an opinion on print size from them. I've printed over 50 canvases with them, and they've been great. I've had a few with problems, but they handled those very well, in no case making me send it back and rather just replacing the canvas (I think I sent them a picture of it once). I've been very happy with them.

Another option is WHCC--white house custom color. They've called me anytime there MIGHT be a problem with an order, particularly overprinting (which causes you to lose a little of the pic). But I've never ordered canvas from them...only prints. But they've been super for those...both the quality and the service.

Check out Aluminize for printing on Aluminum. There are many here that have printed that way--I have one coming as soon as I try--a Groupon. But I haven't tried myself yet.

ETA: You could try upsizing/upscaling them with Genuine Fractals or equivalent--or even Photoshop, and see how they look at 1:1 simulating the print size.

This is a good indication of what size to make your prints work well
