Within my (broad) interpretation I think all of these used backlighting as a significant element ...

Oh that's right. Yours was the similar shot that beat out mine.(Similar in the sense that the subjects were the same, not how we executed the image.) Oh how I wanted to stomp on you.

There are some really great images there :)

I think this is going to be a tricky challenge. I can see a lot of images not quite making it, but the potential for some at the top of the pile to be absolutely stunning.

Doubt I'll get time to enter this one, but am really looking forward to seeing what turns up.

This one of jonpink's would be a great example in my opinion (see the light coming through the back of the petals?)... but maybe I just love this shot!!!! ;o)

I only have two in the challenges that would have qualified.
(No direct lighting)
