Not necessarily - I moved so far away to find a sign that when I figured out where I was, I had moved quite a ways from where I started - I assume your guess applies to your entry point. |
Still though, you're better off with some way of narrowing it down. I've gotten a lot of dirt roads, rickety fences, broken down vehicles... just boring as hell landscapes, like the Dust Bowl met the apocalypse. Tough to guess with any accuracy as Canada's so big. |

10275... I guess it's not too bad for a first attempt from a phone, especially since the embedded street view doesn't wanna work well on said phone (can barely move fwd/bkwd and can't zoom). I also kept myself from opening other tabs and researching there, cause that'd be cheating.

This thing is worse than peanuts.
Without looking anything up I'm staying on the correct continent now,
including one shot of a red dirt road with NO visual clues, well except for the red dirt.
Guessed the out-back of Australia and was right. Heh Heh.
Had one shot of the front door of the gift store in Sitka and then couldn't remember where Sitka was.
It is not up by Nome. |

As close as 1meter one time, but the last one was too hard, I got a static view of a town in Albania without any local reference. Naples was my best guess, which is almost exactly on the same latitude, just 411 km to the west |

Some great scores here, especially considering that a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps. |

With two kids, two cats, a puppy, and a grumpy wife in the house? The only time I can relax is at work, but even here I don't get solid time to myself. There's always someone asking me for something, and work internet is really slow. But it would be a fun challenge.
That One metre was very lucky. I spawned right next to a store, and a google on it placed me right off the bat. I didn't have time to google my other locations, but did pretty well. Same continent at least. A couple of really lucky guesses.

| This is very strange, yet probably not strange at all. Yesterday (5/21/13) my GIS instructor was showing us this game at the beginning of class. I saw the title of this thread and said, "Gee, I should go waste some time on the geoguessr game." Soup-rise, soup-rise, that's exactly what this thread is about. I'll be dingly darned. |

Dang it. I thought I did really good until I saw some of the others posted. It's really hard when you can't read the Russian language. I managed to find a billboard with a phone number on this one.
Vologda Russia 3.2km 6217 points
I did better... Somewhere near Perth... .82km and 6410 points. I won't post any more unless I'm within 10 feet. :)
Okay, 22 feet. Stopping now... really...

To make this game a bit more of a challenge,
move either the picture to search for clues
OR
expand the map to zero in on a place.
Not both.
Now that'll test your geography skills. |

Highest score so far is 28643; closest was 0.001 km, on the island of Elba. Also very close in two places in Western Australia and one in Nova Scotia. The other place was a wild guess in Finland which proved be be not so far off the mark ;-Þ.
And finally! A place I've actually been to - standing outside Lenin's Tomb in Red Square, Moscow.

I got 22,360 points. I was a bit closer with A (lucky guess, and I got it in the correct state).
