so having Langdon pick one of your topics was the final nail in this coffin?

Slippy actually has creative ideas.

If I had to point to one thing that drove me away, it would be the increased percentage/number of Extreme Editing challenges. That is a major change in the site, which has moved away from photography and placed a bigger emphasis on Photoshop fantasy creations. It's not that there is a problem with that. It's a choice by the website owners. It's not what I signed up for. My choice is to no longer participate.

I guessed this was on the horizon. Getting token apart in forums once sucks, having that happen on a regular basis is ridiculous.

I can already see in your words a sense of refreshment that will be good for you. Hopefully this move will actually improve your photography further because f it.

All the best!

Thanks, giantmike. Well said! I do feel great this morning. DPChallenge has been an important part of my development as a photographer. I am grateful for the past 7 years and many friendships. The experience has changed for me in the past 6 months. The frustrations were exceeding the pleasant moments. My future growth as a photographer will come from other experiences.

I will miss your knowledge that you shared in the forums and in your comments on my photos through the years. You always put in the extra effort to explain in good detail how to be better.

I will also miss studying your beautiful landscape shots, hoping that in turn it would help me understand my own better.

Good Luck in your business and I hope that your passion really takes off and your reach your wildest dreams,

Thanks, Hot_Pixel, for your kind comments. Truth be told, my passion and energy for photography and business was being blunted in the last few months by DPC. Tonight, I am free from what had developed into a burden.

I am glad to hear this Richard. I can understand fully. I barely, participate on DPC and more and almost never post to threads these days, However, I did want to make sure that I said thanks to you for what you have done at least for me thru the years.

+1

And I'll miss seeing your beautiful images Richard. Best of luck going forward!

Sorry to see that you're leaving, Richard. I've always enjoyed your wildlife and landscape photos so I'll miss seeing the images of the glorious scenery there in Colorado. I've traveled throughout Colorado and New Mexico, seeing your images brings back those good times and the desire to head back for another visit. Hope to be able to find your website. You will be missed here. Best of luck in the future.

Sad to see you go, Richard, I always liked getting your comments esp on wildlife/bird shots. But it sounds like it's all for the best. Good luck in your future endeavours!

DPC is made up of so many diverse voices that makes it all the more enriching...and yes, that sometimes means there will be times of discord (light cannot exist without shadow, yin cannot be without yang). Each time one person leaves it does diminish the community for it is another 'voice'; another perspective of the world that is lost.

Richard, I understand and respect your decision to leave and explore other avenues. I will miss those lovely, sweeping landscapes of yours, those jewel-tone autumn colors of the trees in the Fall, and the wonderful captures of wildlife that you shared here with us over the years. I am glad to hear that you will be leaving your profile intact here for it will allow us to 'revisit' some of those beautiful captures. I wish you all the best with your future endeavours.

In this, I recall this most apt and beautiful picture of yours titled 'Freedom'.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Richard a few times. First time was in Boulder CO. He was captain of Team Discovery in the DPL, my first experience with a team competition. The challenge was "Balloons" so I bought tickets to a hot air balloon ride and he came down from Estas Park to meet and take photos for the challenge. I remember making a comment about how the bright sunlight would make for a good photo, but he recognized my error and suggested that a day with a little cloud cover would actually make a better photo. That comment and all the rest he has given has led me in directions I would not have normally gone. So thank you very much for that Richard. I will miss your spectacular Colorado images too. You have been an inspiration to me for sure. I too will miss seeing your work here. I can feel your freedom from here. Good Luck and Thanks. I'll pop in next time I'm in EP. (:

I'm no fan of the Expert Editing either, it's pretty far-removed from photography. But maybe my opinion will change with time.

Very sorry to see you leave Richard. Your images, like their surroundings, were a breath of fresh air. I will miss you and wish you the best in the future. Take care.

More than anything I will miss your wildlife shots, especially the birds. All the best to you - sounds like you have made the right decision for yourself and your family.

Thanks to all who stopped by to comment. Much appreciated! It's a prime time photography day in the mountains. I had 17 participants in my 8 AM bird walk. We saw 20 species of birds. The weather was perfect. We had great fun!

"Only" 20 species? :-)

I was constantly amazed in following you (and the other participants) in the recent avian side-challenge ... to find and photograph nearly 100 different birds in a mere month would have seemed unbelievable if you'd asked before the challenge started.

Remember you can have fun here too, if you take your own advice and post what you love, and stop caring what other people think about it.

That's a pretty good tally of species in 90 minutes with 17 people in the group. We did get to see a Green-tailed Towhee, which just migrated here from Central America.

I'm about to publish a book on Birds of Rocky Mountain National Park. I'm just about there.

My decision to halt participation at DPC is sitting very well with me. I'm energized by the thought of redirecting my energies and sharply reducing the petty aggravations.
