I spent hours on my nude entry, firstly building the box, then trying to take the photograph of myself. (My wife was on holiday)
Anyway it was frustrating jumping up pressing self timer, running back, posing, hold... hold.. AAAArgh I'm getting a cramp!... Flash.
OR Press, run ... organise, get foot in place, slop FLASH (Shit, I wasn't ready).
Or Press Run ... Organise, Pose, wait, wait, wait. Bummer I didn't press the shutter hard enough.
Anyone watching me would bave been in stitches (Or called the guys in white coats).
Most of the trials were Out of focus, or unsharp due to movement, or Not in the middle, or crooked, or something was showing that shouldn't be.
Anyshow, I was interested How many people had a similar experience.

done that too. Need to get the remote for mine (still can't find one). use the remote on a PDA, but is about the same. big PDA to hide, contort around to keep out of the picture, etc.

I'd like to know how you *DID* get focused on yourself using the self-timer? Did you leave the camera in continuous-focus mode? Did you use a prop and manually focus for the distance? I'm curious.

I used a Prop & manually focused on that. (It was small a chair)

yes, very similar, although much easier to get in position for me.

I first positioned everything (black velvet, lights, reflectors) and took a few snaps to determine camera positioning, cropping etc.
Then moved on to focus on positioning of the lights to get a good toning of the body shape.
Then taped the frisbee (nobody noticed that it was not a discus) to my hand and got fully naked.
Then took selfportraits until I was satisfied about the result and then asked my wife to press the shutter to make sure I was not fully relying on the pre-focus using the self timer.
the result was this image with soft toning :

I was satisfied but still changed my approach, moving from a soft light with reflector to a hard light directly shining on me, which resulted in my challenge entry.

The hard thing was to get into position and make it look natural, like I really was making a swing, my soft image was slightly better in that, I think.
My left foot is now flat on the floor. If you look at the classic statue (see image here ) the foot is turned to enable an easy swing, but I could not hold that position long enough.

Ok. that's the method I use mostly, but I have a *bitch* of a time getting it to work :/

Sometimes I'm thankful for having a compact digital. My Canon G5 came with a remote and it's possible to have a live preview on a computer monitor whilst working. Handy for nude self portraits to make sure all the bits are in the right place. Ha ha!

I used the timer for my self-portrait. I also used my old Canon G2 so that I could swivel the screen around and compose myself in the frame. That made things a lot easier but it was still tricky! Whenever I had a good pose it was too dark or too light, and by the time I'd got up to reset the timer, I couldnt find the same pose again.

I did mine with the timer, but it was very close to me (as I wanted to fill the entire frame) and was therefore very simple. I have a G5, so I just swiveled the screen so I could see how it looked before the timer went off.

I got a friend of mine to stand on the beach while I set up the shot.
Undressed and told him to press and hold the button when I shouted NOW.
5 frames burst each time.

Timer here too. Kind of hard to use remote in a handstand.

I made one for another challenge which is still running so I can not tell more at the moment. But it was hard and fun at the same time.

Tracy--It's interesting what you did here to "convert your figure", but for the sake of discussion, do you think that's in the spirit of the advanced editing rules? I thought we weren't allowed to substantially change the contents of the photo; wouldn't using liquify to remove your "love handles" do that? (No grievance, not trying to get you DQ'd, and I didn't enter, just interested in what people think?)
