I'm really not doing this as a business yet, but I keep thinking about it. I do however do it as a side line every once in awhile when people ask. I have my sitting fee set, and I have my prices for prints. And I probably do a shoot only once a year, because I don't advertise and didn't particularly want to do it.

However, one family for whom I've shot a couple of times gave my name to someone who is in desperate need of senior pictures. However, they're only need is to have the photo to send off somewhere to print announcements.

She's way behind schedule. She thought it was taken care of through the school and the senior pictures through there. But there was a mix up.

If I was doing this as a regular business, I think I'd be creating and offering my own announcements with the picture as part.

I don't have the time to do/create that.

This could be an opportunity to get into the senior photo business for next year. I don't want to overcharge and lose this one (she already said that they were considering just doing it themselves, so it will be easy to lose it), but I also want to be a business and not give away something.

I can certainly have a reason for "giving her a deal", because I too have a graduating senior for which I have no pictures or announcements yet. (We really need to do this, soon)

Any idea of a reasonable way of handling this? It's my own fault for not having this service in place, but I hadn't planned on starting yet.

Advice would be greatly appreciated -- I need to get back to her this morning with a price for her to be able to use the photo for announcements.

$100.00

I wouldn't do ANYTHING for less than a hundred bucks, unless I did it for free...

Senior photography is getting more difficult - even 5 years ago it was 'normal' to go to a studio and/or location session and buy prints, wall portraits perhaps an album. 90% of folks did this.

Well, the inroads of 'shoot and burn for $200' has begun to change the market. Better phones, FB in particular have change what the 'product' is.

I"m getting more and more requests for 'quality head shot' - aunt sally did the 'fun ones' in the woods/train tracks/river but they need 'a good one' for the school/grandma/wallets/announcements.

$300 seems to be a figure nobody squawks over - that would be 1/2 hour session, 2 to 3 outfits, 2 to 3 poses either as files or a handful of prints (think 8x10, 2 5x17, 8 wallets per pose give or take)

I still get an average sale of $800 plus session and a few $1500+ sales a year, but these 'mini sessions' (to me) are increasing.

I charge $200 for the first hour... at my location. $100 for each additional hour. $50 for a different "local" location.
Any number of outfit changes they want to make... if they change quickly, there's more time to shoot.

I don't take every one who asks me. I do it for fun. If it's not fun, I don't do it.
They get a CD of images to print where ever they like for non-commercial purposes only.

I'm probably the least expensive option in Smallville USA here. I don't care. I don't want to print photos for folks and I don't want to shoot sessions until I hate it. I love it now. :D

I'd say the $100-200 range is the right one, Wendy. The time crunch is an issue, and her daughter is only going to be a senior once.
