Are there top notch photographers' without ribbons in DPC. The answer is an absolute "Yes." However, the ribbons will come because the quality is there. You must remember, some photographers study the psychology of the voting blocks by learning from the winners. Others simply shoot to satisfy their own aesthetic sense. Let us not kid ourselves, technique is required to remain above the fray. The artistic eye is then able, like the eagle, to soar above the mundane.

Imagineer's port is the one port I love and hate to visit. I love it because this member knows his craft and he is very well verse in different styles and subjects. I hate it because everytime I visit I feel compelled to select yet another favourite and I have only just begun my journey in looking at ports. Since I became a member I have gone through only 200 and so much to go.

Currently I am riding a different horse in photography. I persue a form until I am satisfied that I have not left anything uncovered. Yet, I am amazed to see the multi talent of this member who rightfully calls himself in DPC Imagineer. The name and the images fit him very well.

I am not going to bore you with a technical discourse except to say that Imagineer knows how to get what he wants and if you spend a few minutes you will agree that if imagineer keeps up his high quality output he will certainly hit those ribbons...they are simply waiting for him.

It would serve newcomers and experience members to study his port. I guarantee you will walk away with some favorites, but most important, you will be deeply impressed and inspired to produce work of a similar caliber. No, it will not happen immediately for he is quite advanced, but I consider his images as benchmark.

My only observation is that Imagineer is currently exploring diverse fields of art photography and that he is moving in the right direction. It is like he is gestating and has cracked the egg. It is only a matter of little time before the full power of his expression breaks lose.

Some of his images are simply outstanding: River walk, Glimpse, London Eye of.." Rise of Shine, Morning Shroud...look for yourself. There is so much more. If you like the heart of photography you will love his work.

Look for yourselves. The visit will bring its own rewards...it will have you thinking, I want to take a better picture, where are my weakness?" Keep looking and improvement will come in due time..but first pay your respects, I have paid mine.

I love to see people start this kind of thread. I completely agree with everything you said. I've been a big fan of Imagineer's for a long time now. I look forward to seeing him ribbon in the near future.

I totally agree, I think also his last entry n the nude II was supposed to be in the first three, he got the highest score from me on that one.

Totally agree! That was my top pick in the challenge and it's in my favorites now.

There are other people on this website just like Imagineer who have not won anything yet, but still need to be recognized.

A couple I know about would be:

Dustin03

Loki

Is there anyone else out there that you think deserves a honor like this, but just has fallen short?

I really hope he gets a ribbon soon. He completely deserves it.

What's going on with the interviews? I'm looking forward to more, more, and more of them.

I just looked and saw which nude II photo he entered. I also gave him a huge 10!

What...I shouldn't be recognized. I'm not as good as Imagineer.

You're being far to modest - I think you have great potential and I see that you're getting better with each challenge. Good luck to you and have a little more confidence ;)

I`ve commented many times on the quality of Jon`s work and the unbelievable lack of ribbon success.
I think it confirms a theory I`ve held based on my own limited success..that winning ribbons is more about hitting the right challenge with the right image and far less weighted on how good you are technically.
Any comparison of Jon`s work and mine would bear this out.

I would second that Gordon, absolutely. And third, fouth or fifth everything else said in this thread.

I think in many ways John can take comfort in the fact he has yet to ribbon. As can others.

DPC is not a good way or place in which to get a professional critique of your work. As we know there is a range of abilities on this site from professional to barely being able to use a camera. And we are all evaluating by our own tastes and abilities.

Rank amateurs tend to like rank amateur standard photos, thats just a fact of life. Nothing wrong with that, but when you evaluate what DPC is and isn't it doesn't become a hardship or surprise if a decent photog has yet to win a ribbon.

Anyone who has been hanging out here at dpc for a while and hasn't picked up on Imagineer's talent hasn't been paying attention.
08/30/2004 09:37:52 AM · #21
Yep. I went to favorite him the other day and discovered I already had! I think it's a matter of clear personal style- no matter what subject he's photographing, I'm never surprised to find out it's his at the end of things. There's no fear of allowing his self showing through his art. I think that goes for several of the most sucessful photographers on site- Julia, librodo and graphicfunk come to mind immeditatly, there are several others.

Damn - can I hand my ribbons back then please ? :)

That particular Nude II entry was high on my lists of favourites too. A damn fine collection of images in John's portfolio too.

As a matter of fact, I believe his current nude entry was by far the most creative effort of the entire lot. This is not ro degrade any of the winners, but judged on sole creativity Jon's image was way above the heads and shoulders.

Well, I've got to say that this thread was a total shock to see after returning from a long (wet) weekend away.

Graphicfunk (Daniel) - I'm overwhelmed by your glowing compliments and thanks muchly for the time and careful consideration you've given to my work - it's much appreciated. But I feel a bit guilty now, as I haven't had much time to comment on people's entries recently!

I'm truly gratified to read so many kind thoughts and comments from people I greatly admire here, which is especially consoling after such wet weather during what should have been a warm summer Bank Holiday. Still, it was quite dramatic and gave me a few decent photos.

I'm normally underwhelmed by the work I produce (which makes me incredibly difficult to live with - yet inspires me to improve!) but the comments contained in this thread and on my images have given me a real boost - so thanks to you all.

By the way, I've no intention of winning a ribbon in the near future either, so don't hold your breath.
: )
