Philip Toledano's classic portraits of extreme plastic surgery.

Not unexpectedly, there's breast augmentation happening here, so NSFW. But the meta-theme seems to be lips and cheeks, or something. Read the text. Freakish...

.. I just can never figure out why people want to do this to themselves.

My opinion of the body-mods aside, this is a great series, and I'm sure it'll have all the impact it was intended to have. Although, I do have to say I'm not a huge fan of the processing, it seems he's taken something which was already pretty darn harsh on the eyes, and taken it a step further with his processing that tends to lend itself to a harsh and somewhat gritty look.

As to WHY people find it desirable or attractive, I'm with you there, but...

An increasingly common theme in sci-fi involves a future of humanity in which genetic modification and/or surgical procedures allow customizing of bodies for both functional and aesthetic purposes. What we're seeing here is the first step in that direction, perhaps? Although, to be fair, body-modification has a long history: think of foot-binding and head-planking of babies in Imperial China, think of tribal cultures in Africa that use stacked neck rings to give their women impossibly long necks. Lip discs, ear discs, ritual scarification, is this really any DIFFERENT?

We're long overdue for the invention of the anti-gravity bra.

it only looks bad because it isn't commonplace.

I wonder if they really think they look good, or do they have to constantly work at convincing themselves they do.

I LOVE her face, her wrinkles and her confidence. I look in the mirror and see a new wrinkle and think....thank you for allowing time to make me who I AM....not who someone thinks I should be......

I read the plastic surgery scam/talk..... dear God please keep me away from L.A.

The funniest part was when they patently state that this is the way it WILL be in the future...B>S>

We had better get used to this. I know two girls who've had nose jobs and quite a few who are saving money for it. None of them are in the glamour business. In a few years time wrinkles will crop up and well, I'm expecting they'll need to be fixed too.

Technology will improve, of course, but so will the desire to attain perfection by every strata of society. They'll be doctors for someone who wants this stuff on the cheap. That's when the more unfortunate looking accidents will happen.

Just be yourself and grow old gracefully. These people that do this to themselves end up looking like monsters. Sorry if that's too harsh.

They've been photoshopped, just in real life.

Real life PS disasters. Sorry, I hate to be less than accepting and loving, but dang folks, spending tens of thousands to look like that is .. hard to understand.

hard for you to understand.

people have been mutilating their bodies for centuries, most recently with piercings and tattoos, how is this any different?

Androgeny and androidgeny seem to be the new body aesthetic. Looks like we're headed for a Klingon/Vulcan future.

You know, funny enough, I did think several of them looked rather Vulcan/Romulan in appearance.
