My sister and brother in law want two of my prints for their house...although I've mostly printed canvas, I recommended they go with standouts for these.

The photos are

and

//nrshapiro.com/featuredprints#h6d99cae

QUESTIONS:

I've only done black edges, and I've only done 3/4" for the 4 or so standouts I've ordered (from WHCC).

They were wondering about 1.5" and the various colors that are now offered by WHCC.

Having never done that, I don't really know how they'd look. I suspect for the BW, either a Black or White edge, maybe the Stainless edge. For the color, the light wood colors might work. But my conservative notions say either black or white.

Has anyone tried the colored edges (WHCC or similar)? What do you think would look good for those photos?

For a 20x30" print, would you go with 3/4 or 1.5"?

I'm anxious to here your personal experience, or even just your opinion...and of course, any client experiences would be great too.

Thanks!

ETA: I have to order by tomorrow night to take advantage of the 20% off sale!

What are "standouts"?

(Obviously, I'm going to be of NO help to you...)

I usually use black for all my standouts/canvases. There might be some that I'd use white on, I suppose, but generally I go with black. I'd consider what color the wall was if you're on the fence. If it's off-white or something, I'd definitely not use white, as it will look super weird. The black has a very nice, clean look, both on color and bw that I've used it on.

I really don't like anything but black or white for these. What my printer's doing up here, though, is basically a very thin bevel on a standout. That's very cool...

My same feelings too...I should have linked in the WHCC examples of edges to show you the options though...

Good point about the match to the walls.

I think we're going with WHCC, but I'm curious Robert, what do the bevels look like?

depends if your going for a artistic look or photographic look, prints on canvas is very cliche and very commercially viable but its been relegated to a medium that is both just commercially domestic... if thats what your going for then colour is just as much an option as black and white, suggest looking at the wall colour to match it or contrast it as it it now become an interior design piece anyway.

I don't know exactly how to describe it. Imagine the standouts except the "block" is 1/4 inch bigger horizontally and vertically than the print, then it's beveled into the print leaving a 1/8 inch, 45-degree cut subliminally "framing" the otherwise floating print. They have a couple different options for thickness of bevel. I use the thin ones except on 3-foot or bigger prints, where the 1/4 inch looks more proportional.

Oh, also for your WHCC users...do you think the Lustre coating is worth it (for protection). Not as concerned with price, since these are $133 prints as it is and the coating is $3.50, mainly concerned with anything that might degrade the image or make the surface look weird.

Sorry for all the questions, but I always get nervous about ordering a $100+ print where you have to get it right the first time!

I use the coating. Since there's no glass, you need SOME sort of protection, or cleaning the print becomes a major issue. It doesn't seem to impact quality as far as I can tell...

Ok, thanks everyone.

We ordered the black .75" edges, and I added the lustre coating as well. After the sale pricing and including drop shipping, two 20x30's came to approx $161. Pretty nice!

Now I just have to hope they print well that size. About 120 dots per inch since they are both fairly old shots.
