Of course we can do a lot of stuff in basic but still under advanced editing there were more ways to get beautiful images. With plenty of challenges that can work under basic, Langdon chose the wrong one :/

You can't always get what you want

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime
You just might find
You get what you need

Well, looking at the forecast for the Poconos, rain Friday, cloudy Saturday, and I'll be leaving Sunday to come home. So I doubt I'll get a night sky shot from the mountains.

The problem with this challenge for me is that it doesn't get dark til friggin' 11:30pm right now in this part of the world. Good thing I don't live any further north....

I was going to grab the cameras and head out the door about 15 minutes ago,
until I realize why it was so dark out ... the fog had crept in on "little kitten feet."
Summer has arrived in San Francisco.

I've found a bunch of weird crap shelters. I'll give it another try something out of this world in year 2018.

Grumpy about this one :) It's almost the longest day of the year in combination with a new moon tomorrow :(

But, I like the comment of GeneralE: "You can't always get what you want". Guess life is hard ;)

Man. 15 entries? There was a gorgeous crescent moon setting just now, but I'm too tired to go out and get the shot I wanted. 30 minutes on a single frame would be brutal anyway.

Here in Holland there's hardly a star to be seen even on a clear night and it's the wrong time for shooting the moon too. Guess I'll just send in a pitch black entry, that ought to do it.

Tropical storm rain going through here all this week -- we've had around 8" of rain during the shooting period, and no stars. Last night -- not looking promising. :(

(did seem kind of silly to have during new moon time. :)

It is challenging. Current moon phase is a beautiful crescent ... visible around sunset. The meteor shower was spectacular at 2:30 am last night. We may have lightning illuminating cumulonimbus clouds tonight in early evening t-storms. For urban dwellers, the cityscapes at night can be wonderful, regardless of, or maybe because of the weather.

I find this discussion boring. But at least the Can't-Do Chorus has gone quiet for now...

i have the sneaky feeling that you thought about taking a pic of a nights sky reflection in a puddle of water :-)

You're amazing. I actually did just take a picture of the daytime sky reflected in a puddle of water about half an hour ago...

The problem is the description. It specifically says use the moon stars or planets. Otherwise the rain skies would have been fun.

That's why the naysayers are out. The description makes it almost impossible for some of us when its cloudy all week.

It's always the photographer's prerogative to exercise artistic license. Granting tolerance for your above mentioned constraints should go without saying. I would focus on the challenge title, leaving the description as a guideline, but not something generating a DNMC vote, as long as the entry complies with the challenge title.
